Albufeira: Complete Guide — Things to Do & See in 2026

Why visit Albufeira

Albufeira is the most popular destination in the Algarve — and for good reason. This former fishing village has transformed into the region’s tourism capital without entirely losing its charm. The old town, with its narrow streets and whitewashed houses, contrasts with the famous Strip’s nightlife and the dozens of beaches stretching along kilometres of coastline.

It’s the most versatile destination in the Algarve: it serves families looking for safe beaches and water parks, couples wanting seaside restaurants, young people seeking nightlife, and retirees who appreciate the mild year-round climate. If it’s your first time in the Algarve, Albufeira is a safe and complete choice.

Things to see and do in Albufeira

Old Town (Cidade Velha)

The heart of Albufeira is a maze of cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, and flowering balconies. Wander through the streets that lead down to Fishermen’s Beach, discover small craft shops, and stop at a terrace for coffee with a view. The main church and clock tower are old town landmarks worth seeing.

The Strip (Rua da Oura)

The Strip is the epicentre of Algarve nightlife. Along hundreds of metres, bars, clubs, and restaurants keep summer nights going until the early hours. It’s not for everyone — if you prefer quiet, stick to the old town — but it’s a unique experience in southern Portugal.

Zoomarine

One of the Algarve’s best theme parks, Zoomarine combines dolphin shows, pools, water slides, and educational marine life presentations. Perfect for families with children, it deserves a full day. It’s about 10 minutes by car from Albufeira centre.

Boat trips to the caves

From Albufeira marina, dozens of boat trips depart along the coast to the famous caves and cliffs. The most popular route goes to Benagil Cave, one of the Algarve’s most iconic images. Options include large boats, speedboats, or stand-up paddle for the more adventurous.

Albufeira Marina

The marina sits west of the centre, surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s a pleasant spot for an evening stroll, with views of yachts and fishing boats. Deep-sea fishing trips and sunset catamaran cruises also depart from here.

São Rafael Beach

Considered one of Albufeira’s most beautiful beaches, São Rafael Beach has crystal-clear waters and spectacular rock formations. It’s quieter than the central beaches and perfect for snorkelling. Accessible by car or taxi (5 minutes from the centre).

Oura Beach

Oura Beach is the closest beach to the Strip and one of Albufeira’s liveliest. With beach bars, water sports, and a youthful atmosphere, it’s the perfect spot for combining daytime beach with nighttime partying.

Municipal Market

Albufeira’s recently renovated Municipal Market is the ideal place to buy fresh fish, local fruit, cheeses, and cured meats. On Saturday mornings, there’s an expanded market with crafts and regional products — an authentic experience that many tourists miss.

Best beaches near Albufeira

Albufeira has more beaches than any other city in the Algarve. The most popular include:

Praia de São Rafael com águas turquesa em Albufeira, Algarve

  • Fishermen’s Beach — Albufeira’s central beach, walkable from the old town. Always lively, with restaurants and bars on the avenue above.
  • São Rafael Beach — One of the Algarve’s most beautiful, with crystal-clear water and rock formations. Quieter than the central beaches.
  • Oura Beach — Next to the Strip, young and lively atmosphere. Beach bars and water sports.
  • Coelha Beach — Small and sheltered, hidden between cliffs. One of the quietest and prettiest in the area.
  • Galé Beach — Extensive, with rocky areas and wide sandy stretches. Great for families and coastal walks.
  • Peneco Beach — Another central beach, accessed through a rock tunnel. Iconic view of Albufeira from the sand.

Where to eat in Albufeira

Albufeira has hundreds of restaurants, but it’s worth being selective. For fresh seafood, head to the restaurants near Fishermen’s Beach or the marina — avoid those with photos on the menu and menus in 10 languages. Grilled fish and seafood cataplana are must-tries.

In the old town, the lanes hide traditional eateries with local prices and homemade daily specials. For something more upscale, the marina has restaurants with views and more elaborate menus.

Where to stay in Albufeira

Albufeira is divided into several accommodation zones:

The Strip nightlife area in Albufeira, Algarve

How to get to Albufeira

From Faro airport: Albufeira is just 35 minutes by car via the A22. Transfer services, taxis, and Eva buses connect the airport to Albufeira centre. A private transfer is the most comfortable option (around €30-40 per trip).

By train: Albufeira-Ferreiras station is 6 km from the centre. Regional trains run from Faro (30 min) and Lagos (1h). From the station, take a taxi or local bus to the centre.

Practical tips

  • How long to stay: 3-5 days is ideal to explore Albufeira and nearby beaches. With a week, you can take day trips to Silves, Lagos, or Benagil caves.
  • Parking: In summer, parking in the centre is difficult. Use the paid car parks at the city entrance or park at the marina and take the shuttle.
  • Best time: June and September offer the best weather without August’s madness. Check our best time to visit guide for details.
  • Families vs nightlife: Travelling with children? Stay near the western beaches (São Rafael, Galé). For nightlife, stay near the Strip or old town.
