Best Time to Visit the Algarve: Weather by Month
May, June and September are useful starting points for an Algarve trip. Compare official Faro weather averages and choose dates around your plans.
The best time to visit the Algarve depends on what you want to do. For a broadly comfortable trip, choose May, June or September. July and August bring the most dependable hot, dry weather. October to April can suit sightseeing, golf and walking, with a greater chance of rain.
When is the best time to visit southern Portugal?
If your southern Portugal trip is to the Algarve, May, June and September are useful starting points for combining sightseeing and beach plans. This guide uses Faro station data. It does not describe the whole of southern Portugal, so check a local forecast for each stop if your trip also includes the Alentejo.
Compare dates alongside your Algarve trip budget. Weather averages cannot tell you which week has the lowest flight or room prices.

Algarve weather by month
The table below uses the Portuguese weather service IPMA climate normal for Faro, calculated from 1991 to 2020. A climate normal describes typical conditions over 30 years, not a forecast. The figures describe Faro station; they are not measurements for every destination in the Algarve.
| Month | Mean high | Mean low | Rainfall | Days with at least 1 mm rain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 16.3°C | 8.3°C | 49.3 mm | 6.0 |
| February | 17.0°C | 8.8°C | 41.9 mm | 5.4 |
| March | 18.9°C | 10.8°C | 46.8 mm | 5.6 |
| April | 20.7°C | 12.4°C | 39.0 mm | 5.3 |
| May | 23.5°C | 15.0°C | 26.2 mm | 3.8 |
| June | 26.8°C | 17.8°C | 5.1 mm | 0.8 |
| July | 29.4°C | 19.6°C | 0.9 mm | 0.2 |
| August | 29.2°C | 19.9°C | 3.0 mm | 0.2 |
| September | 26.4°C | 18.3°C | 21.5 mm | 1.9 |
| October | 23.3°C | 15.8°C | 56.0 mm | 6.0 |
| November | 19.6°C | 11.9°C | 75.5 mm | 6.6 |
| December | 17.1°C | 9.7°C | 90.0 mm | 7.0 |
These are monthly averages, so a particular week can be hotter, cooler, wetter or drier. IPMA recorded an average 35.5 days per year at or above 30°C in Faro during the same normal period. Heat precautions can therefore matter beyond July and August.
January and February
Winter temperatures do not guarantee beach weather. Faro has mean daytime highs of 16.3°C in January and 17.0°C in February. Rain falls on an average of about six days per month when using the IPMA threshold of at least 1 mm.
Consider these months for town visits, golf, food and flexible walks. Bring a waterproof layer and check opening hours because some seasonal businesses close or reduce their schedule.
March and April
Spring brings mean highs of 18.9°C in March and 20.7°C in April at Faro. These months are useful for coastal paths and town visits because average temperatures remain well below midsummer levels.
Weather can still change quickly and evenings are cool. Our Algarve in March and April guide covers seasonal planning in more detail.
May
May is one of the best all-round months. Faro has a mean high of 23.5°C, a mean low of 15.0°C and 26.2 mm of normal monthly rainfall. Beach days are possible, while walking and sightseeing are generally easier than during peak summer heat.
The Atlantic can still feel cool and ocean conditions vary by beach. Do not assume that warm air means warm or calm water.
June
June has a 26.8°C mean high at Faro and 5.1 mm of normal rainfall. It is an option for travellers seeking warm conditions with a lower mean high than July or August.
Check accommodation and activity availability for your exact dates before committing to travel.
July and August
July and August are the hottest and driest part of the Faro climate normal. Mean highs are 29.4°C and 29.2°C, while days with at least 1 mm of rain average only 0.2 in each month.
Consider these months if hot, dry climate averages are your priority. Those averages do not guarantee the weather during your stay. Avoid exposed walks during the hottest part of the day and follow official fire-risk restrictions.
September
September is another excellent compromise. Faro keeps a mean high of 26.4°C and a mean low of 18.3°C. Normal rainfall rises to 21.5 mm, so the month is not as dry as July in this climate normal.
Do not use the climate figures as a measure of beach crowds or accommodation availability. Check your chosen destination and dates separately.
October
October has a comfortable mean high of 23.3°C at Faro, but normal rainfall increases to 56.0 mm and an average six days reach at least 1 mm. It can deliver excellent sunny spells, yet it needs a flexible itinerary.
Combine outdoor plans with town, market or food options that work if the weather changes. See our autumn and winter Algarve guide.
November and December
November and December are the wettest months in the Faro normal, with 75.5 mm and 90.0 mm respectively. Mean highs remain mild at 19.6°C and 17.1°C, but short days and variable weather make them unsuitable for a trip built entirely around beaches.
They can work for a road trip if you keep plans flexible. Compare actual quotes before deciding whether winter fits your budget.
Best time for beaches and swimming
For air temperature and low rainfall, June to September is the clearest beach window. Water temperature is not included in the IPMA Faro land-station normal above, and it varies along the coast. Check an official marine forecast and local flags rather than relying on a single regional average.
Use our best Algarve beaches guide to choose a coast, then review the individual beach page for access and seasonal services.
Best time for hiking and golf
For hiking, favour March to May and October to November, then adjust the day to the forecast. Summer heat, exposed cliffs and limited shade can make a route unsafe even when the distance looks short. Our hiking guide helps compare routes.
Golf is possible year-round, but October to May avoids the normal midsummer heat. Course prices and maintenance schedules vary, so confirm directly. See the Algarve golf guide for course planning.
When is the Algarve cheapest?
Airfares depend on origin and booking date; accommodation prices depend on location, property, events and cancellation terms.
Compare the total trip rather than the room alone. Check transport availability and the opening dates of any services you need. Our Algarve trip cost guide provides a broader budgeting framework.
Regional differences matter
The table reports Faro station data. Check the forecast for your chosen destination rather than treating the Faro averages as local measurements for Sagres, the west coast or inland towns.
Use climate normals to choose a month, then use an official short-range forecast for the exact place and day. A regional monthly average cannot guarantee beach, hiking or boating conditions.
