Praia do Peneco, also known as Tunnel Beach, has about 1 km of golden sand and a 4.4 rating. It has a Blue Flag and is known for its unusual access — a tunnel carved through the rock — and for an iconic boulder that rises in the middle of the sand.
Getting there and parking
Access is via a tunnel through the rock connecting Albufeira’s centre to the beach, or via a 28-metre panoramic elevator with views over the bay — one of the most original entrances to any beach in the Algarve. Nearby parking is paid.
The sand and the sea
The beach has about 1 km of golden sand and calm water. The boulder standing in the middle of the sand is one of Albufeira’s most photographed landmarks, and almost acts as a marker splitting the beach in two.
Facilities
It’s well suited to families, with toilets, showers, sunbed hire, and lifeguards in summer.
Where to eat
Being close to the historic centre, there are restaurants and cafés just steps away, both on top of the cliff near the tunnel entrance and along the waterfront closer to the sand.
Nearby beaches
Praia dos Pescadores is just 400 metres away. Praia da Oura and Praia de São Rafael are both about 2.6 km, in different directions along the coast.
Where to stay
Nearby accommodation includes Albufeira Beach Cliffs House, Rocamar Exclusive Hotel & Spa (4 stars, adults only), and Vila São Vicente Boutique. Check hotel availability near Praia do Peneco.
