A base in Lisbon to explore the city by areas.

  1. Day 1

Baixa and riverfront. Stroll through Praça do Comércio and leave time to explore the streets of the centre.

  2. Day 2

Alfama and viewpoints. Organise the route according to the group's comfort: there are climbs and stairs. If you want to visit the castle, confirm the ticket and timetable.

  3. Day 3

Belém. Combine a riverside walk with the visits that interest you. Confirm opening times and tickets before choosing the monuments.

Before booking, confirm schedules, tickets, access and weather conditions. Adjust arrival and departure days to your transport.

Sources to prepare visits

For a first trip to Lisbon, start by choosing where to stay and group visits by area. Two days allow a first contact with the city; with three or four, there is more margin to slow down or dedicate a day to Sintra or Cascais. These guides help you make these choices, without turning your holiday into a race between monuments.

Where to start

First define the full days you have available. An afternoon arrival and a morning departure do not equal two days of visits. Then, compare accommodation with the journey between airport and hotel. A seemingly central reservation may require climbs, stairs or a transport link that does not suit your luggage.

Choose a main visit for each day and leave the remaining time for the surrounding area, meals and breaks. Baixa and Chiado, Alfama, Belém and Parque das Nações work as different planning blocks. Putting everything in the same day increases travel and reduces time to enjoy each place.

How many days to reserve for Lisbon?

Time available Suggested plan Choice to make
2 full days Historic centre one day and Belém the other Choose priority indoor visits
3 full days Add Parque das Nações or explore the city at a leisurely pace Decide between more Lisbon and a trip to Sintra
4 full days Combine city days with Sintra or Cascais Reserve a full day for the chosen trip
A partial arrival or departure Stay near your accommodation Avoid tickets with times close to your flight

These are organisation suggestions, not a promise to visit all attractions. For a trip with young children, limited mobility or interest in museums, it may make more sense to dedicate the four days to the city. A lighter programme also allows adapting the trip to the weather.

Choosing your base and transport

Baixa and Chiado are starting points to consider for exploring the historic centre. Alfama offers another neighbourhood experience, but access to accommodation deserves attention. Those accepting metro travel can compare other zones, such as Avenida da Liberdade or Parque das Nações, instead of deciding only by the bedroom photo.

For an urban stay, start by comparing walking and public transport. Only then assess if the car adds anything to your programme. If you intend to continue your trip in Portugal, distinguish Lisbon days from days outside the city and confirm parking at your accommodation before reserving a vehicle.

What to confirm before booking

  • The exact hotel address and conditions for arrival outside normal hours.
  • The attraction opening time and what each ticket includes.
  • The transport needed to get there and back, including any service changes.
  • Cancellation conditions, final price and any additional charges.
  • The accessibility of the entire route, not just the building entrance.

Lisbon has areas with hills and cobbles. A short map route can be demanding with a baby buggy or suitcase. Confirm lifts, transport alternatives and access directly with operators and accommodation when essential to the trip.

A trip that adapts to the day

In case of heat, save the most demanding walks for a cooler part of the day. If the forecast indicates rain, swap the order of the blocks and combine an indoor visit with a nearby area. The visit to the Oceanário, for example, can be considered in planning for Parque das Nações, first checking conditions with the operator.

To leave Lisbon, choose the trip based on what you want to do: monuments and parks in Sintra or a coastal trip to Cascais. The train link is only part of the plan; also confirm the route from the station to the place you will visit and the return link.
