To choose when to visit Lisbon, use climate averages as guidance and the weather forecast for the days of your trip. These are different pieces of information: an October average does not indicate whether it will rain on your Tuesday, nor does a summer average maximum represent the maximum possible heat.

Average temperatures by month

The table uses the IPMA climate normals of 1991-2020 for the Lisbon / Geophysical Institute station. The columns show the average of daily maximum temperatures and the average of daily minimum temperatures, in degrees Celsius. These are historical station values, not a forecast, recorded extremes or sea water temperatures.

Month Average daily maximum (°C) Average daily minimum (°C)
January 15,1 8,6
February 16,4 9,1
March 18,9 11,0
April 20,4 12,3
May 23,1 14,4
June 26,1 16,8
July 28,2 18,2
August 28,8 18,8
September 26,6 17,6
October 22,8 15,3
November 18,1 11,8
December 15,4 9,4

Spring and autumn: compare by type of visit

The averages for April, May, September and October can serve as a reference for those who prefer to plan walks with average temperatures lower than in July and August. This preference does not guarantee absence of rain, fewer visitors or cheaper accommodation.

Choose the season also according to your programme. A trip with several indoor visits may adapt differently from an outing centred on the beach or outdoor walks. Keep the possibility of changing the order of the itineraries when you know the forecast.

Summer: manage walks and breaks

If the forecast indicates heat, distribute the more demanding walks over cooler periods and intersperse breaks. Bring water and adequate sun protection and adapt the effort to the group’s needs. Monthly averages do not exclude much hotter days.

When choosing accommodation, confirm the conditions that are essential to your comfort, including the existence of air conditioning if you need it. Do not deduce the room’s facilities from the hotel category. For children or people with specific needs, prioritise comfort over the number of stops in the itinerary.

Winter and rainy days

A winter trip can combine short walks with indoor activities and breaks. Prepare layered clothing and choose footwear suitable for the route and the forecast. If there is rain, reduce the walking stretches and check official warnings before setting out.

The area-based visits guide helps to combine outdoor and indoor activities. The Oceanário can be considered in the Parque das Nações block, after first checking the operator’s timetables and conditions. A covered activity may still require exposed travel between hotel, transport and entrance.

Sintra and Cascais require their own forecast

These averages are for Lisbon. Do not use them as a specific forecast for Sintra or Cascais. Check the forecast for the destination and the operators’ warnings for the departure date. A change of programme may be preferable to keeping a walk just because it was chosen weeks earlier.

For the beach, air temperature alone does not inform, by itself, about bathing safety or sea state. Check local conditions and respect signage and safety instructions. This guide does not present water temperatures nor guarantee bathing conditions.

What to check near departure

  • Forecast for Lisbon and for each excursion destination.
  • Weather warnings and any access changes.
  • An indoor alternative that matches the day’s area.
  • Clothing, footwear and luggage suitable for the actual forecast.
  • Conditions of tickets already booked, before changing dates.

At IPMA you can consult the current forecast and warnings. Use the main Lisbon guide to organise accommodation and transport. The decision on the specific day should follow the forecast and current conditions, not just the historical table.
