To choose what to do in Lisbon, organise visits into four areas: Baixa and Chiado, Alfama, Belém and Parque das Nações. In each, combine a main visit with an outdoor walk. This division helps reduce travel and choose tickets based on your route.
Baixa and Chiado: start from the centre
Baixa is a good reference for a first walk in the historic centre. Use Rossio, Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio to orient the route, choosing the direction according to your accommodation. Chiado allows adding shops and cafés to the programme, without making each stop a compulsory visit.
Moving between areas deserves attention to climbs. For a day with limited mobility, confirm the suitable alternative for the route instead of assuming a short distance on the map will be easy. If you want to add a viewpoint, São Pedro de Alcântara can be considered in the Chiado and Bairro Alto block, adjusting the route to your walking ability.
Alfama: historic streets and fado
Reserve a block to explore Alfama without a tight schedule on every corner. Interest lies also in the neighbourhood and the route, not only in the monuments. Choose in advance if you intend to make an indoor visit and leave space for climbs, breaks and orientation in the streets.
If fado is part of the plan, compare the format of the experience before booking. Confirm whether the proposal is only a show or includes a meal, what the times are, the final price and the conditions for children. Do not assume all houses have the same programme or the same type of atmosphere.
Belém: monuments and riverfront
Belém deserves its own block. The Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Discoveries Monument can serve as references to organise the outdoor walk. Passing through the area does not mean it is necessary to enter all monuments.
Choose the indoor visit according to your interest and confirm in advance the opening, reservation and access with the official operator. If there are closures or unavailability, keep the riverfront walk and adapt the rest of the programme. Do not buy a sequence of tickets without accounting for travel, queues and breaks.
Parque das Nações: another day, another area
Parque das Nações allows considering a different programme from the historic centre, with a riverside walk and a visit to the Oceanário. It is an option to compare for a family trip or to combine outdoor and indoor in the same block.
Confirm directly at the Oceanário the ticket you want, the times and access conditions. If it rains, distinguish the time spent indoors on the route from the accommodation: a covered activity does not make the whole day immune to the weather.

Independent or guided visit?
A guided visit can be useful if you value context and accompaniment. Compare the language, meeting point, announced duration and included tickets. An experience presented as a city walk may not include monument entries. Also confirm how cancellation works.
Trams, lifts and funiculars require confirmation of current service with Carris. Do not base an entire day on a link you have not yet verified. When there are changes, choose an alternative that respects the pace and needs of the group.
To distribute these areas across the available days, consult the Lisbon itineraries. If you are still preparing your trip, start with the main guide and the comparison of areas to stay. Before buying a tourist pass, check when the Lisboa Card may be worthwhile. A trip outside the city should have its own day, as in the Sintra guide.
