Day Trips from Faro, Albufeira and Lagos: Where to Go and How
From Faro, the easiest day trips are the Ria Formosa islands, Tavira, Olhão and Loulé. From Albufeira, go to Faro, the Benagil caves by boat, and Silves. From Lagos, head west to Sagres and Cape St Vincent, walk Ponta da Piedade, or go up to Monchique. Seville, in Spain, works as a long day from any of the three, best from the eastern Algarve.
You do not need a car for most of these. The regional train runs along the whole coast and links all three bases, buses fill the gaps, and boats cover the islands. This guide shows how to reach each place, how long it takes and what to check before you go, including the boats that stop running outside summer.
Getting around for day trips
The Algarve regional railway, the Linha do Algarve, has been fully electrified since 19 July 2026, and direct trains now run between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António without changing at Faro. According to CP, the rail operator, there is one train an hour between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António and one every two hours between Faro and Lagos, with extra trains at peak times and two faster InterRegional trains a day.
| Train route | Journey time | Single fare |
|---|---|---|
| Faro to Olhão | about 10 min | €1.60 |
| Faro to Loulé | about 14 min | check the fare |
| Faro to Tavira | about 33 min | €3.60 |
| Albufeira-Ferreiras to Faro | 27 to 34 min | €3.80 |
| Lagos to Silves | about 32 min | €3.30 |
| Lagos to Faro | about 1 h 30 min | €8.30 |
Times come from the CP timetable valid from 19 July 2026 and fares from the regional fare table. Some departures run only on weekdays, so check the day you travel.
- Tickets: buy on the CP app, online up to 60 days ahead, or at the station. You can only buy on board without a surcharge when the station has no ticket office or machine, so do not count on paying on the train.
- Stations outside town: Albufeira-Ferreiras station is in Ferreiras, inland from the coastal town (Albufeira council), and Silves station is 3 km from the centre (Silves council). Plan a taxi or bus for the last stretch.
- Buses: the Vamus Algarve network covers the places the train does not reach. Stop times between towns are indicative, so check the Vamus timetable for your date.
- By car: the A22 motorway across the Algarve has had no tolls since 1 January 2025. See our Algarve transport guide or compare car rental in the Algarve.
Day trips from Faro
Ria Formosa islands
Faro’s islands are reached by boat from the Cais das Portas do Mar (Faro council):
- Ilha Deserta (Barreta): the Animaris ferry takes 45 minutes and costs €5 each way. The service depends on the weather.
- Ilha do Farol: the crossing takes about 40 minutes. Boats run a full timetable from 1 June to 15 September and a reduced one, with four departures a day, from 16 September to 31 October.
- Ilha da Culatra: the boat from Faro runs only from June to August.
No timetable is published for November to May, so outside the season confirm at the quay before planning an island day. More on the lagoon in our guide to the Ria Formosa natural park.
Tavira
The train takes about 33 minutes and costs €3.60 each way. Tavira’s old town, bridges and churches fill a relaxed day; see our Tavira guide.
Olhão and Armona island
Olhão is ten minutes from Faro by train. From its waterfront, the ferry to Armona takes about 15 minutes (Visit Portugal); ferry times vary by season, so check them locally. Our Olhão guide covers the market and the islands.
Loulé market
Loulé is 14 minutes from Faro by train, or you can take bus 59 from Faro. The municipal market hall opens Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 15:00 and on Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, and on Saturdays a producers’ market fills the surrounding streets from 07:00 to 13:00 (market hours). Saturday morning is the best time to go. See our Loulé guide.
Day trips from Albufeira
Faro
Faro is the classic day trip from Albufeira, by train from Albufeira-Ferreiras (27 to 34 minutes) or by bus. Our separate guide to the Albufeira to Faro day trip covers transport, a one-day itinerary and the common mistakes.
Benagil caves by boat
Boat tours to the Benagil caves leave from several points along this coast. The rules matter (Portuguese Maritime Authority):
- Swimming into the cave, or entering with any flotation aid, is prohibited, and so is landing on the sand inside.
- Kayaks and paddleboards may only visit with a guide. Boats stay 2 minutes inside; kayak groups can stay up to 8.
- Visits are suspended when the sea or the weather worsens.
Without a boat, bus 77 runs from Lagoa to Praia da Marinha and Benagil, and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail passes above the cave opening. Details in our guide to visiting Benagil cave and to boat trips in the Algarve.
Silves
Bus 17 links Albufeira and Silves. The red sandstone castle opens every day except 25 December and 1 January, from 09:00 to 18:00 between October and April and to 20:00 in summer, with last entry 30 minutes before closing (Silves council). See our Silves guide.
Loulé
Bus 10 runs from Albufeira to Faro via Loulé, and the train stops at Loulé station (€2.30 from Albufeira). Aim for a Saturday morning, when the producers’ market is on.
Day trips from Lagos
Sagres and Cape St Vincent
Vamus bus 47 runs from Lagos to Sagres and on to Cabo de São Vicente, the south-western tip of mainland Europe. The cape is open, but the lighthouse is closed to visitors indefinitely. Combine it with Sagres fortress and the surf beaches; see our Sagres guide.
Ponta da Piedade
Just outside Lagos, boardwalks run across the headland from Canavial to Praia do Pinhão, with the lighthouse in the middle (Lagos council). Walk it, or see the rock arches from the water on a boat trip. More in our Lagos guide.
Monchique and Fóia
Fóia, at 902 metres, is the highest point in the Algarve; on clear days the view reaches Cape St Vincent (Monchique council). There is no direct bus from Lagos: go to Portimão by train or bus, then take bus 94 to Monchique.
Costa Vicentina
The west coast is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, a 110 km protected strip of cliffs and wild beaches (ICNF). Bus 79 runs from Lagos to Odeceixe and bus 22 links Aljezur and Vila do Bispo. For a route, see our itinerary for the wild Costa Vicentina or the Algarve hiking trails.
Silves
Silves is 32 minutes from Lagos by train (€3.30). Remember the station is 3 km from the centre.
Seville from the Algarve
Seville makes a long but doable day trip, easiest from Faro or Tavira.
- By car: the A22 has no tolls, and the Spanish A-49 motorway to Seville is not on Spain’s list of toll motorways. ALSA gives about 200 km for the Faro to Seville route.
- By bus: ALSA and Flixbus run Faro to Seville. Their times are shown in local time, and Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal all year, so the eastbound trip looks an hour longer than it really is. Check the timetable for both directions.
- Real Alcázar: book only through the official Alcázar website. Lookalike sites sell “official” visits at higher prices. From 1 October to 31 March it opens 09:30 to 17:00, and a general ticket costs €15.50.
- When to go: Seville’s average maximum is 36°C in July (AEMET), so spring and autumn suit a day of walking far better than midsummer.
Plan by season
- Summer (June to mid-September): the island boats run their full timetables and Silves castle stays open later. Book cave tours early and avoid Seville at midday.
- Autumn (mid-September to October): the Farol boats run a reduced timetable until 31 October and the Culatra boat from Faro has stopped. From 1 October the Alcázar and Silves castle move to winter hours.
- Winter (November to May): no Faro island timetable is published, so check at the quay. Trains and buses run all year and are the easiest way to do Tavira, Loulé, Silves and Sagres. Cave visits are suspended in bad weather.
