Boat Trips in the Algarve: Caves, Dolphins and Sunset Cruises

The Algarve seen from the sea is completely different from the Algarve seen from the clifftop. The caves and arches that look immense from above become even bigger when you enter them by boat. The orange limestone cliffs, the natural arches, the beaches inaccessible by land — you can only see them this way, from the sea.

There are trips for all tastes and budgets. Here’s a guide to the main options, with real prices and what to expect from each one.

Cave Tours — Ponta da Piedade, Lagos

Ponta da Piedade is probably the photographic icon of the entire Algarve. The golden limestone rock formations, the natural arches, the flooded caves — it’s a setting that completely justifies its fame. The best way to see it all is by boat.

Trips depart from Lagos marina and last about an hour. The route passes through the arches, enters the main caves, and sails past beaches inaccessible by land. It’s a calm trip, without strong swell on most days, suitable for children. Price: €20-25 per person.

Tip: morning light (9am-11am) is best for photographing the cliffs. Afternoons tend to be windier. Book in advance in July and August — boats have limited seats.

Benagil Cave — The Algarve’s Most Famous

Benagil Cave went viral on social media a few years ago and never stopped. The hole in the cave’s ceiling, with light pouring directly onto the sand inside, is one of the most shared images of the Algarve. And the reality — when you see it in person — doesn’t disappoint.

Access to the cave is only possible by boat, kayak or swimming (swimming is not recommended — the current can be treacherous). Boat tours depart from Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, or from Benagil beach itself in small boats. Larger boats stay at the cave entrance; small ones go inside.

Kayak tours are a popular alternative — you enter the cave at your own pace, can stay longer, and the experience is more immersive. For kayaks: hire in Benagil or Carvoeiro, the paddle to the cave takes 15-20 minutes. Boat tour price: €20-30 per person.

Dolphin Watching

The Algarve has a resident dolphin population — mainly common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. These aren’t captive dolphins or ones lured with food: they’re wild animals that live and hunt in these waters. The boats go to their natural habitat and wait.

The sighting rate is high — most operators guarantee a refund if there are no sightings, which says a lot about the consistency. Dolphins often approach the boats out of curiosity, especially catamarans. Seeing a pod of 50 dolphins jumping around the boat is an experience that children (and adults) won’t easily forget.

Trips depart from Albufeira, Lagos and Vilamoura and last 2-3 hours. Price: €35-50 per person. The best season is April to October, with calmer seas and more frequent sightings.

Catamaran with BBQ — The Relaxed Option

For those who want a more social trip less focused on caves, catamarans with barbecue are a very popular option. The idea is simple: you leave the marina, sail along the coast, eat grilled food on board, can swim if you want, and return in the late afternoon.

Lagos has a strong tradition of these trips — the traditional boats known as “Bom Dia” have been a reference on this route for decades. The trip typically lasts 3-4 hours and includes a meal and drinks. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, suitable for groups and families. Price: €45-65 per person.

In Vilamoura and Albufeira there are similar operators, some with larger and more sophisticated catamarans. Watching the sunset from the sea, drink in hand, is hard to beat.

Ria Formosa — Island Tours from Faro and Olhão

Ria Formosa is a world apart. This protected coastal lagoon between Faro and Tavira has barrier islands, channels, saltmarsh, and extraordinary biodiversity. The boat trips here are completely different from trips along the rocky coast — calmer, more contemplative, with stops at islands for swimming or exploring.

Regular ferry boats to the islands (Ilha Deserta, Ilha de Farol, Ilha da Culatra, Ilha de Tavira) depart from Faro marina and Olhão port. Beyond the ferries, there are organised tours including snorkelling stops, birdwatching, and visits to the islands’ fishing communities.

Ilha Deserta, accessible from Faro, is the extreme — no permanent buildings, just dunes and nature. In March and April, with few visitors, it’s a place of uncommon silence and beauty. Organised tour price: €25-35 per person. Regular ferries are cheaper — around €5-8 per trip.

Sport Fishing in Sagres

Sagres is the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe. The waters here are deeper, the currents stronger, and the fishing is on another level. Fishermen have known this for centuries.

Sport fishing boats depart from Sagres port and Baleeira for half-day or full-day fishing. Depending on the season, targets include sea bream, grouper, tuna (in season), and other deep-sea species. You don’t need prior experience — the skippers teach the basics and handle everything.

It’s also an opportunity to see the Cape St. Vincent coast from a different angle — the black cliffs seen from the sea are impressive. Price: €60-100 per person for half a day.

When to Go and Practical Tips

Best time: April to October. The calmest seas are from June to September, but April and May offer an excellent balance between conditions and crowd levels. July and August mean more boats, more noise, more waiting.

For seasickness: if you’re sensitive to motion, take a preventative medication (like Stugeron or similar) the night before and the morning of the trip. Eat something light before boarding — an empty stomach makes seasickness worse. Stay outside, look at the horizon, and avoid reading or looking at your phone. Catamarans are generally more stable than rigid boats.

What to bring: sunscreen (the sun reflects off the water and burns faster), hat, an extra layer for the wind (even on warm days, it can get cool at sea), and a water bottle. Some trips include drinks — check beforehand.

Bookings: from June to September, always book in advance — ideally 2-3 days ahead. Off-season, you can usually turn up at the marina and find availability. Lagos, Vilamoura and Albufeira marinas always have several operators and it’s easy to compare and choose on the spot.

The Algarve has one of the best coastlines in Europe for boat trips. The variety is enormous — from a peaceful cave tour to a full day of deep-sea fishing. What’s certain is that any of them will change the way you see this coast.
