Taking the train from Albufeira to Faro
The railway station is named Albufeira-Ferreiras. It is not in Albufeira Old Town or beside the beaches. The Municipality of Albufeira confirms that the Algarve and South lines stop there, while municipal historical information places the station about 6.5 km from Albufeira.
Plan the trip as two separate legs: your accommodation to Albufeira-Ferreiras, then the train to Faro. A short-looking rail journey can become stressful if you leave no margin for the first leg.
How long does the train take?
In the CP timetable valid from 19 July 2026, examples include Albufeira-Ferreiras at 07:22 and Faro at 07:51, or 08:04 and 08:31. Other direct regional services take slightly longer. These examples explain the usual journey length but are not a promise that the same train will operate on your date.

Do you need to change trains?
The published Algarve Line timetable contains direct regional services between Albufeira-Ferreiras and Faro. Select a direct service in the journey planner. Do not assume every train displayed under “Albufeira” follows the same service pattern.

Arriving at Faro station
Faro railway station is a practical arrival point for a city visit. Start by walking towards the marina and Jardim Manuel Bívar, then continue into the pedestrian centre or the walled old town.
Visit Portugal uses Jardim Manuel Bívar as the focus for routes towards the Ria Formosa, downtown Faro and the historic old town. This makes those three areas a sensible structure for a first visit.
A realistic one-day Faro itinerary
Morning: marina and the old town
Walk from the station towards Faro Marina and Jardim Manuel Bívar. Continue through Arco da Vila into Vila-Adentro, the walled historic quarter. Explore the Cathedral square and the lanes inside the walls without rushing between every attraction.
If you plan to enter the Cathedral, museum or another monument, confirm its opening hours for the day of the week. Religious sites can restrict access during services.
Lunch: central Faro
Return towards the pedestrian centre and choose a restaurant that fits your timing. Avoid building the itinerary around a specific venue unless you have checked its current opening days and reservation policy.
Afternoon option 1: Baixa and local streets
Spend the afternoon around Rua de Santo António, the marina and the lower town. This is the safer option when your return train is early or the weather is uncertain.
Afternoon option 2: Ria Formosa boat trip
A boat trip can add the lagoon to the day, but only if the operator’s departure and return times leave a generous margin before your train. Do not add an island visit based on an old timetable. Weather and tides can affect marine trips.
Is Faro worth a day trip from Albufeira?
Yes if you want a historic city, local streets and the Ria Formosa rather than another beach-resort day. Albufeira and Faro offer genuinely different settings, and the direct rail link makes that contrast accessible without hiring a car.
Faro is less suitable if your only goal is a wide beach immediately beside the city centre. Faro Beach and the barrier islands require an additional connection, so treat them as separate plans rather than automatic extensions of a short city visit.

Driving from Albufeira to Faro
