Benagil Cave: how to visit in 2026 (boat, kayak and rules)

The most famous cave in the Algarve is only accessible by sea — and the rules have changed: swimming is prohibited and kayaks may only enter on a guided tour. Practical guide 2026.

What is Benagil Cave

The Benagil Cave is a sea cave on the coast of Lagoa, near Benagil Beach, famous for the circular opening in the roof that lets in sunlight and illuminates the small inner beach. It is one of Portugal’s most photographed natural settings — and it is precisely for this reason that access has become regulated.

This guide explains the ways to visit it today, where the tours depart from and what the rules in force allow and prohibit.

The current rules, first

Since 2024, by order of the maritime authority (Portimão Harbourmaster’s Office), access to the cave has changed:

  • Swimming to the cave is prohibited. There have been drownings on the crossing from the beach: the sea that looks calm on the sand creates dangerous swell at the cave entrance, and there is constant boat traffic.
  • Landing on the inner beach of the cave is prohibited — for all visitors, whether they arrive by boat, kayak or SUP.
  • Kayak and SUP may only enter the cave on a licensed guided tour. Renting a kayak and entering on your own is no longer permitted.
  • The time spent inside the cave is limited to a few minutes per group.

The rules may be adjusted from season to season — always confirm with the tour operator or the maritime authority before you go.

Boat or kayak: which to choose?

Boat tour Guided kayak tour
Effort None — you sit and watch Physical: you paddle to the cave
Route Benagil coast and several caves and arches Slow approach, at water level
Inside the cave Brief entry, no landing Brief entry, no landing
For whom Families, those seeking comfort Those seeking adventure and who are fit
Sensitive to sea Cancels in strong swell Cancels earlier — requires calm sea

In both cases the experience inside the cave is short; the difference lies in the way there. See also our guide to boat tours in the Algarve, which covers caves, dolphins and sunset along the whole coast.

Where the tours depart from

Tours to the cave depart from several points on the central Algarve coast:

  • Benagil — the closest departure; a short crossing to the cave.
  • Carvoeiro — a few minutes by boat, often combined with the rest of the coast; see our Carvoeiro guide.
  • Armação de Pêra, Portimão and Albufeira — longer tours that pass more caves and rock formations along the way.

You can book online in advance — in summer the morning slots sell out. Check availability and prices for Benagil Cave tours.

See the cave without going to sea

The cave roof can be seen on foot: the Seven Hanging Valleys trail passes above the cave, and the circular opening can be viewed from the cliff, safely and for free. It is an excellent alternative on days of rough sea — see the best trails in the Algarve.

Best time to visit

The light effect is strongest at midday, when the sun enters directly through the opening. The sea is typically calmer in the morning, and May-June and September-October combine good conditions with fewer crowds — in peak August, both the tours and the village of Benagil fill up. Consult our Algarve weather page for the week of your visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim to Benagil Cave?

No. Since 2024 it is prohibited to swim to the cave and land on the inner beach. The rule exists for safety reasons: there have been drownings on the crossing and boat traffic is constant.

Can I rent a kayak and go on my own?

You can paddle along the coast, but entry to the cave is only allowed on guided tours by licensed operators.

Does the boat actually go inside the cave?

Licensed tours enter the cave when sea conditions allow, without landing and for only a few minutes. In strong swell, operators show the cave from the entrance.

Is it suitable for children?

The boat tour is, and it is the most comfortable option for families. Kayaking requires paddling ability and is not advised with small children.

What happens if the sea is rough?

Tours cancel or adjust the route — entry to the cave always depends on the day’s conditions. As an alternative, the natural viewpoint on top of the cliff works in any sea.
