Snorkeling in the Algarve: Best Spots & Guide [2026]

Snorkeling and diving in the Algarve

Snorkeling in the Algarve is an underrated experience. Crystal-clear waters, underwater cliffs, sea caves and surprisingly rich marine life make this coast one of southern Europe’s best snorkeling destinations. Water temperature ranges from 15°C (winter) to 23°C (summer), with visibility exceeding 15 metres on the best days.

Best snorkeling spots

Praia da Marinha

Rated one of Europe’s 10 most beautiful beaches and the Algarve’s best snorkeling spot. Underwater rock formations, caverns and abundant marine life. Excellent visibility. Near Carvoeiro.

Benagil Caves area

The famous Benagil cave is spectacular, but since 2024 access is only permitted by licensed boat or guided kayak — swimming to the cave is prohibited. However, the entire coast between Benagil and Marinha is excellent for snorkeling, with rock arches and accessible caverns.

Praia do Camilo (Lagos)

Small cove between rocks with calm, clear water. Ideal for beginners. Rocky bottom with sea urchins and varied fish.

Ilha da Culatra / Armona

The Ria Formosa barrier islands offer warm, calm waters on the lagoon side with rich biodiversity — seahorses, rays and juvenile fish. Ferry from Olhão (20 min).

What you’ll see underwater

  • Fish — Sea bream, bass, mullet, wrasse, damselfish
  • Invertebrates — Octopus, moray eels, starfish, sea urchins, anemones
  • Ria Formosa — Seahorses (protected species)

Diving

Dive centres in Lagos, Portimão and Albufeira. Discovery dives cost €50-80. Highlight: Ocean Revival (Portimão) — Europe’s largest artificial reef with 4 sunken warships.

Practical information

  • Best season — June to September (20-23°C, maximum visibility)
  • Equipment — Mask + snorkel rental: €5-10/day. Short wetsuit recommended except July-August.
  • Guided tours — Kayak/boat snorkeling: €30-50/person including equipment.
  • Safety — Watch for currents near cliffs. Never snorkel alone in isolated spots.

FAQ

Is the Algarve good for snorkeling?

Yes. Clear waters, interesting rock formations and varied marine life. Not the Red Sea, but excellent by European standards — especially around Lagos, Carvoeiro and Benagil.

Can I swim to Benagil Cave?

No. Since 2024, access is exclusively by licensed boat or guided kayak. Swimming there is prohibited and enforced. Book a tour in advance — they cost €25-40 per person.

Do I need a wetsuit?

In July-August (22-23°C) not essential for short sessions. Other months, a shorty wetsuit is recommended. The water is cooler than the Mediterranean.
