To choose a Ria Formosa island, start with your mainland base and return transport. Compare Deserta Island from Faro, Armona or Culatra in the Olhão area and Tavira Island or Barril in the Tavira area. Always confirm the current connection before finalising plans.
Faro and Olhão: choose the island before the ticket
The official Animaris factsheet describes a seasonal service between the Porta Nova quay in Faro and Deserta Island. Check with the operator for the available option on your intended date, the quay, departure and return; do not use a timetable from another season.
Official Algarve transport reports identify connections from Olhão to Armona, Culatra and Farol. These are a framework of routes, not a current timetable. Confirm the actual service, island and disembarkation point with the operator before buying. Do not assume you can switch islands without a confirmed connection.
Tavira and Barril: accesses not to be confused
For Tavira Island, check boat connections from Tavira or Quatro Águas. For Barril, official information describes access from Pedras d’El Rei, crossing the lagoon and continuing on foot or by tourist train. Verify current conditions for each access.
Choose the departure point according to your accommodation and desired beach. A ticket for Tavira Island should not be treated as proof that it includes access to Barril or another crossing. Confirm parking, luggage and land transport separately when needed.
Beach, walk and accommodation: organising the full day
For a first visit, choose one island and allow time for beach or walk, meal and return. If booking a guided tour, compare stops and duration with a simple crossing. They are different services and may have different disembarkation rules.
Before boarding, confirm the last return, any changes due to navigation conditions and the services you need at the destination. If you plan to stay overnight, arrange accommodation and crossings together. Take your rubbish with you and respect the protected area signage.
