Faro Airport (IATA: FAO) is the gateway to the Algarve. It sits just 4 km from Faro city centre and receives flights from across Europe, especially the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and France. It’s a small, single-terminal airport — easy to navigate, no complications.

Tip: Drive times assume the A22 (toll-free since 2025). Via the EN125, expect double the time.
Car rental
The most popular option. All major companies have desks in Arrivals: Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, Goldcar and several local firms. Queues can be long in summer — book online in advance for better prices and less waiting.
What to know
- Prices — €20-50/day peak, €10-25 off-peak. Comparison sites like DiscoverCars or RentalCars help find the best deals.
- Insurance — CDW included, but excess can be €800-1500. Consider extra cover or a credit card with rental coverage.
- Transmission — Most cars are manual. Automatic costs more and has limited availability — book early.
- A22 toll-free — The Algarve motorway has been free since 2025. If driving to Lisbon (A2), that motorway still has tolls with payment booths.
- Fuel — Return the car with a full tank to avoid inflated refuelling charges.

Bus
Aerobus (Vamus line 56)
The Aerobus connects the airport to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos. Runs 5 times daily in peak season (May to October) and twice daily off-season. Price: ~€4-17 depending on destination. Journey to Albufeira: ~70 minutes, to Lagos: ~2 hours.
Local bus (Próximo)
Lines 14 and 16 connect the airport to Faro city centre and bus station. Frequency: every 30-60 minutes. Price: ~€2.35. Tickets bought from the driver (have coins ready).
Limitations
No direct buses to Vilamoura, Carvoeiro, Tavira or Sagres. For those destinations, go to Faro first and connect, or use a taxi/transfer.
Taxi and Uber/Bolt
Taxis wait outside Arrivals with metered fares. Example prices:

- Airport → Vilamoura: ~€30-40
- Airport → Albufeira: ~€45-55
- Airport → Lagos: ~€90-110
Uber and Bolt work at the airport and are typically 20-30% cheaper than taxis. Download the app before landing. Pick-up point is at car park P2.
Private transfer
The most comfortable option, especially for families or groups. Book online before arrival — the driver waits with a name sign at the terminal. Reliable companies include Shuttle Direct, Welcome Pickups and Algarserra. Prices are per vehicle (not per person), making it good value for groups of 3-4.
Train
There is no train station at the airport. Faro station is 6 km away (15 minutes by taxi/Uber). From there, take CP regional trains to Albufeira (30 min), Lagos (1h30), Tavira (40 min) and other towns. The bus 16 + train combo is the cheapest option for destinations like Lagos.

Practical tips
- Online check-in — Always check in online. Airport queues are long in peak season, especially for low-cost airlines (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air).
- Arrive early — Security can take 30-45 minutes in summer. Arrive 2 hours before your flight.
- SIM card — Buy a Portuguese SIM in Arrivals (Vodafone or NOS) if you need mobile data. Tourist packs cost ~€15-20 for 10-30 GB.
