Algarve in Autumn & Winter: Guide to October, November and December

Why visit the Algarve in autumn and winter

While most tourists concentrate their holidays between June and September, the months of October to December hold some of the Algarve’s best-kept secrets. Mild temperatures, deserted beaches, low prices, and a golden light that transforms the landscape — autumn and early winter in the Algarve are a completely different experience from summer, but equally memorable.

With over 300 days of sunshine per year, the Algarve doesn’t “close” in winter. Most restaurants, hotels, and attractions stay open, and the region gains an authenticity lost during the summer peak. It’s the preferred time for golfers, hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking a peaceful getaway without the crowds.

October in the Algarve

October is arguably the best value-for-money month of the entire year. Temperatures hover around 19-24°C, the sea still retains its summer temperature (20°C), and accommodation prices drop dramatically compared to August and September.

Beaches become significantly emptier, but the weather still invites swimming and full beach days. It’s also the start of the surf season on the west coast, attracting surfers to beaches like Amado and Tonel in Sagres.

What to do in October

  • Beach — Still possible, especially in the first two weeks. Sea at 20°C.
  • Hiking — Perfect temperature for coastal trails. The Via Algarviana and Seven Hanging Valleys routes are at their best.
  • Surfing — Start of the swell season on the west coast. Sagres and Amado get good waves.
  • Festivals — Various food and wine harvest festivals take place in October across the Algarve interior.
  • Golf — Start of peak golf season. Ideal temperatures and dropping green fees.

November in the Algarve

November marks the transition to low season. Temperatures drop to 15-19°C and rain becomes more frequent, though it rarely rains for days on end. The sea cools to 18°C — too cool for swimming, but still pleasant for beach walks.

It’s the quietest month of the year for tourism. Beaches are practically deserted, restaurants serve without queues, and accommodation is at its lowest prices. For peace and authenticity, November is perfect.

What to do in November

  • Hiking — Green landscape after the first rains. Trails cooler and more pleasant than summer.
  • Birdwatching — Ria Formosa receives migratory birds. Flamingos, storks, and other species can be spotted in Olhão and Tavira.
  • Gastronomy — Chestnut season, medronho (arbutus brandy), and game dishes in the interior.
  • Golf — Excellent conditions. Many courses offer discounted packages.
  • Spas and wellness — Hotels with spas offer special low-season rates.

December in the Algarve

December in the Algarve is surprisingly pleasant for visitors from northern Europe. With temperatures of 12-16°C and frequent sunshine, it’s incomparably milder than Germany, the Netherlands, or the UK at the same time. Sea water drops to 16°C — too cold for swimming, but coastal walks remain enjoyable.

Christmas and New Year in the Algarve have their own charm. Many towns decorate their streets with lights, and restaurants prepare special seasonal menus. Faro, Loulé, and Albufeira host Christmas markets and festive events.

What to do in December

  • Christmas markets — Faro, Loulé, and Albufeira host markets with crafts, food, and entertainment.
  • Winter hiking — Short but sunny days. The Serra de Monchique and interior are at their best.
  • Winter golf — Green fees at their lowest. Many European golfers escape winter to play in the Algarve.
  • New Year’s Eve — Faro and Albufeira host street parties. Restaurants with special menus.
  • Cultural visits — Silves (castle), Tavira (old town), and Faro (Old Town) without crowds.
