Ponta da Piedade, Lagos: How to Visit in 2026

How to visit Ponta da Piedade in 2026: boat trips to the caves, parking, boardwalks, kayak rules and the current state of nearby beaches.

SunRoamy

Ponta da Piedade is the group of rock formations and caves that closes the Lagos coast to the south, about 2 km from the centre. The limestone rock sculpted by the sea forms arches, caves and small coves, more impressive seen from the sea than from land. You can visit on foot, along the boardwalks and viewpoints that follow the cliff, or by boat, on a licensed tour that enters the caves.

In 2026, two pieces of information change the visit plan: pedestrian access to Praia do Camilo is forbidden and the lighthouse is not open to the public. This guide brings together what to confirm before you go, where the boat tours depart from, how to arrive without a car and the state of the surrounding beaches.

What is Ponta da Piedade

According to Algarve Tourism, Ponta da Piedade is about 2 km from Lagos, on the Costa d’Oiro, with caves, little-known bays and quiet beaches. Fishermen gave names to the rock formations: General De Gaulle, Chimney, Cathedral, Fine Arts, Camel, Museum, Submarine, Kitchen and Lovers’ Cave, among others.

At the highest point stands the Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse, in service since 1 July 1913, on the site of the old and ruined chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, ceded to the Navy in 1911-1912. The tower is 5 m high, stands at 51 m altitude, has a range of 20 nautical miles and was automated in 1983, according to the National Maritime Authority. The area is also important for birdlife: it is one of the few places in Portugal where you can observe in the wild the western jackdaw and the rock dove, according to the factsheet of a project co-financed by the European Union.

How to get to Ponta da Piedade

On foot, the simplest access starts at Praia de Dona Ana, from where the boardwalks lead all the way to the lighthouse.

By car, check the signage on site before parking. The project approved by the Câmara reserves the final stretch of the road for service, supply and emergency vehicles, and provides for two car parks: one at Camilo, for 56 light vehicles, and another near Ponta da Piedade, with 150 light vehicles and 10 coaches. In August 2024, the regional press already described the area as among the most sought-after free car parks in Lagos, but the current situation is not officially confirmed: check on site or with the Câmara.

By bus, the Câmara has included Camilo and Ponta da Piedade among the areas with transport shortages to be covered by the new A Onda network, contracted in April 2026; confirm routes and timetables with the operator. By tourist train, Visit Portugal indicates that the Marina train runs along the sea to Dona Ana and Ponta da Piedade; confirm with the local operator. Boardwalks and viewpoints

The Ponta da Piedade Cultural Landscape Route, between Praia do Canavial and the lighthouse, is about 2 km long, easy difficulty, with its own signage and two rest areas with viewpoints, according to the municipal Enjoy Natureza brochure. The newest boardwalks link Praia do Pinhão to Praia do Canavial, passing by Dona Ana and the lighthouse. Until April 2023, the counting system installed in the first phase had already recorded more than 1.8 million passages. Part of the Fishermen’s Trail of the Rota Vicentina, between Burgau and Lagos railway station, coincides with this route. See also our guide to hiking trails in the Algarve.

See the caves by boat

Showing the caves to visitors is a tradition dating back to the mid-20th century, when local fishermen began doing so to supplement their fishing income, according to the Lagos Municipal Council. Today the activity is licensed by the municipality, which provides for up to 40 annual licences for vessels that meet safety requirements and regulates embarkation and disembarkation in the maritime corridor alongside Dona Ana. The safety capacity of each vessel is set by the Lagos Port Captaincy, under Decree-Law no. 149/2014.

A narrow staircase descends from the lighthouse to the cove where the boats wait. A 2022 municipal project planned to requalify it, but there is no confirmation that it is open: confirm with the Câmara or the Captaincy before descending.

See our guide to boat trips in the Algarve for more options on the coast. Rules change from captaincy to captaincy: the Benagil Cave, for example, is under the Portimão Port Captaincy and has its own rules.

Kayak and stand up paddle

The navigation edict of the Lagos Port Captaincy allows registered canoes and kayaks to operate up to half a mile (1000 m) from the coast, by day, with good visibility and calm sea. Stand up paddle is only authorised between sunrise and one hour before sunset; during the bathing season it is forbidden within 100 m of the waterline in concessioned zones, and permitted between the coast and 300 m outside them.

Since 16 August 2024, a municipal regulation also prohibits, during the bathing season between 09:00 and 19:00, descending the stairways of Praia de Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo with boards, kayaks, canoes or diving equipment; the fine ranges from 55 € to 550 € for individuals and from 550 € to 2500 € for companies.

There is no official source on unguided kayak hire or entering the caves on your own: confirm with the Captaincy or the operator before booking.

Beaches around: state in 2026

Beach State Source
Camilo Pedestrian access forbidden, confirmed by the APA on 6 August 2026, following winter storms; bathing water in “no swimming” since 9 June 2026, due to access instability Portuguese Environment Agency
Pinhão Stairways destroyed by a rockfall in January 2024; Câmara-APA protocol in May 2026 to stabilise the cliff, but the stairway is unlikely to be restored Lagos Municipal Council
Dona Ana Beach open; stairways with restriction on boards, kayaks and diving equipment during the bathing season Lagos Municipal Council
Canavial No official restriction notice found; confirm the state on site

Always confirm the signage and protective barriers on site: conditions change with winter and ongoing works.

Safety on the cliffs

The Portuguese Environment Agency defines the cliff risk zone as the area that can be reached by debris from rockfalls, with width equal to 1.5 times the cliff height, and maintains risk signs on five Lagos beaches: Batata, Camilo, Dona Ana, Pinhão and Porto de Mós. The risk sign for Praia do Camilo advises keeping away from the top and base of the cliffs and isolated boulders, and indicates 112 for emergencies and the Maritime Police (916 613 499).

The Decree-Law no. 159/2012 requires anyone frequenting the coastal strip to stay clear of signed danger zones and to respect, alongside the cliffs, the same distance of 1.5 times the cliff height; remaining in a forbidden zone or crossing protective barriers is an offence, with a fine of 30 € to 100 € for individuals.
