Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: practical guide

Before walking the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, confirm the trail condition, the weather and the return. Choose the programme according to the group's experience and local warnings.

Trail overview

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a 5.7 km nature footpath linking Vale Centeanes Beach to Marinha Beach. The route follows an almost continuous line of limestone cliffs, interrupted by watercourses that meet the sea above sea level, creating the hanging valleys that give the trail its name. The landscape results from over 20 million years of erosion, presenting imposing reliefs, juniper scrub on cliff tops, seabirds on rocky walls and bats in karst caves.

Access and return logistics

As this is a linear trail (not circular), the main logistical decision is how to return to the starting point or your accommodation.

  • Two vehicles: leave one car at Vale Centeanes and another at Marinha Beach (or vice versa).
  • Taxi/local transfer: arrange pickup at the trail end; confirm availability and cost the day before.
  • Walk there and back: double the distance to 11.4 km; only suitable if fitness allows.

Editor’s suggestion: if travelling solo or without a car, book the return transfer in advance and carry contact details for two local firms.

Essential gear

  • Trail boots or shoes with good grip (uneven ground and loose stone).
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen.
  • Water (minimum 1.5 L per person) and energy snacks.

Safety and conduct on cliffs

  • Do not approach cliff edges for photographs.
  • Respect flora (juniper) and fauna: do not disturb birds or bats in caves.
  • Inform someone of your expected start and finish times.

Choosing an accommodation base

Planning option When to consider What to confirm
Short visit Want to include the visit in a day with other stops Choose one priority and confirm access before setting off.
Visit with more time Want to explore with breaks Organise the return and take gear suited to the programme.
Alternative plan Conditions do not allow the planned visit Postpone exposed activities and choose another visit after confirming availability.

Pre-booking checks

  1. Confirm the actual walking distance to the trail (do not rely solely on “near the beach”).
  2. Ask about free cancellation and late check-in policy if arriving after walking.
  3. Check for an outdoor shower or laundry for trail gear.
  4. Confirm breakfast starts early (7 am or earlier) for morning departures.
