A day between the caldera and the locality
Sete Cidades is located in the west of São Miguel. A balanced visit combines a view from above with time in the locality and by the lakes. The Vista do Rei viewpoint allows observation of the Green and Blue Lakes within the caldera; on the shore, the scale of the landscape is different and the walk may take longer.
For a first visit, reserve a day in your itinerary to the west and choose a main activity. This can be visiting the viewpoints, walking or joining an excursion. Trying to do everything, adding several other areas of the island, leaves little time to enjoy the lake. This is an editorial plan to organise independent visits.
A simple sequence for the visit
- Start at Vista do Rei if visibility is good. Observe the caldera and decide which stops you wish to keep.
- Descend to the locality of Sete Cidades and take a walk by the lakes. Allow time here for a break and for a meal.
- In the afternoon, choose between extending the walk in the area or continuing to Mosteiros. This extension makes sense if your transport and the group’s pace allow it.
The sequence is a suggestion, not a mandatory schedule. If the mountain is covered, you can reverse the plan and start at lower altitude. Visibility on the shore and at a viewpoint is not necessarily equal, so it is worth assessing the conditions at each stop.
Visiting the viewpoints or walking a trail
The stop at Vista do Rei and the footpath from Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades are distinct experiences. The official path ends in the locality and should not be treated as a simple return to the car park. If you are walking, organise the connection between the end of the path and your car, or confirm this logistics with the guide.
Check the condition of the paths at the Azores Trails Portal. Choose the walk by difficulty and available transport. For a short visit, staying in the visitor areas and taking a lakeside walk avoids adding a full trail to an already full day.
Car or excursion from Ponta Delgada
By car, you can adjust the order of stops and time spent in the locality. Plan parking and return to your base, especially if extending the day to the coast. On an excursion, compare the announced stops: seeing the lake from a viewpoint is not the same as having free time by the water.
The Sete Cidades excursion linked on this page is a specific option from partner Klook. Confirm the current programme, the guide’s language, meeting points and inclusions before booking. To compare transport options, consult transport in São Miguel.
How much time to reserve and where to stay
For viewpoints and locality, a day allows a less rushed programme than fitting the west after a visit to Furnas. If you choose a trail, use that path as the central activity. The 5-day itinerary separates the west, Furnas and the central zone of the island.
Ponta Delgada can serve as an urban base for this outing; accommodation does not need to be by the lake to visit Sete Cidades. Compare the actual location of options in the guide where to stay in São Miguel. Accommodation and excursion bookings are made separately with the partner.
