New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Funchal

The New Year’s Eve celebration from 2006 to 2007 earned Funchal the Guinness World Record for “largest fireworks display in the world”, a title it held until 2012.

The display that earned the record lasted about 8 minutes, forming an arc of 6 km along a 2.7 km width around the bay, with 37 launch points (31 on land and 6 at sea) and approximately 17 tonnes of fireworks.

The display continues to take place every year, today without the active title, and continues to attract thousands of visitors to Funchal.
