Driving from Lisbon to the Algarve takes about 2 hours 30 minutes via the A2 motorway (Autoestrada do Sul) followed by the A22 (Via do Infante). It’s approximately 280 km to Faro.

A22 motorway in the Algarve, Portugal

Recommended route

Lisbon → 25 de Abril Bridge or Vasco da Gama Bridge → A2 (southbound) → Almodôvar → A22 (exit for your Algarve destination). The A2 has traditional toll booths. The A22 has been toll-free since January 2025 — no payment device needed to drive in the Algarve.

Costs

  • A2 tolls: ~€16-18 (Lisbon to Algarve, with payment booths)
  • A22 (Algarve): toll-free since 2025 — no charges
  • Fuel: ~€25-35 (depending on vehicle)
  • Estimated total: €40-55 per trip

Driving tips

  • Avoid Friday afternoons and summer Sundays — traffic on the A2 can be heavy.
  • Stop at the Alcácer do Sal service area (halfway) for a coffee break.
  • If renting a car, note that the A2 has toll booths (accepts cards/cash), but the A22 in the Algarve is toll-free since 2025.

By train — the most comfortable option

The train is the most comfortable way to travel from Lisbon to the Algarve. Trains depart from Lisboa-Entrecampos station (or Sete Rios for some services) to Faro.

Alfa Pendular (fastest)

Portugal’s high-speed train does Lisbon-Faro in 2h45 to 3h. Comfortable, with air conditioning, bar car, power sockets, and WiFi. Prices from €22 (2nd class, advance purchase) to €32 (1st class). 3-4 trains daily.

Intercidades (cheaper)

The Intercidades is slower (3h15-3h30) but slightly cheaper (€20-24). More stops along the way.

Train tips

  • Buy online in advance at cp.pt — cheaper and guarantees a seat.
  • Faro station is in the city centre, 5 minutes’ walk from the marina.
  • From Faro, regional trains connect to Albufeira (30 min), Lagos (1h30), or Tavira (40 min).
  • Book days ahead for weekends and holidays.

By bus — the cheapest option

Rede Expressos and FlixBus run direct buses from Lisbon (Sete Rios terminal) to several Algarve cities. The journey to Faro takes 3h to 3h30 and costs €15-22.

Available routes

  • Lisbon → Faro: 3h-3h30, several daily
  • Lisbon → Albufeira: 2h45-3h
  • Lisbon → Lagos: 3h30-4h
  • Lisbon → Portimão: 3h15-3h30

Buses are comfortable with air conditioning and WiFi. FlixBus often has promotions from €10. Book online at rede-expressos.pt or flixbus.pt.

By air — does it make sense?

There are occasional flights between Lisbon and Faro (TAP), but they rarely make sense for this distance. Total time (getting to airport + check-in + flight + baggage + transfer) ends up similar to or longer than the train, usually at a higher price. Only worth it if connecting through Lisbon or finding an aggressive deal.
