Why Visit Faro Beach
Faro Beach has an advantage no other Algarve beach offers: it’s literally on the capital’s doorstep. You land at Faro Airport, rent a car, and in 15 minutes you’re on the sand. But it’s not just convenience — the beach itself is generous, with fine sand stretching for kilometres, calm waters on the Ria Formosa side and more exposed waves on the ocean side.
The barrier island is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of Portugal’s most important ecosystems. On the lagoon side, you can spot flamingos, herons and an impressive variety of migratory birds — especially between September and March.
How to Get to Faro Beach
By car
From Faro centre, follow the bridge connecting the mainland to Faro Island (EN125-10). The road crosses the Ria Formosa with beautiful views. GPS: 36.9810, -7.9890. Access is direct and well signposted.
By bus
Próximo bus line 16 connects Faro centre to the beach year-round, with increased frequency in summer (every 15-20 minutes). It’s one of the few Algarve beaches with good public transport access.
From the airport
Faro Airport is just 5 km from the beach. A taxi costs around €10-12. Perfect for anyone with a long layover or an early arrival looking to enjoy an afternoon on the sand.
Parking
Several car parks along the island. The main car park near the bridge is paid in summer (~€2-3/day). Further east, free roadside parking is available but fills quickly in July and August. Tip: arrive before 10am in summer or take the bus.

Best Time to Visit
Faro Beach is pleasant year-round thanks to its southern exposure and Ria Formosa protection. Summer is busiest — the beach gets packed on weekends. Spring and autumn are ideal: near-empty beach, pleasant water (especially September-October), and restaurants without queues. In winter, it’s perfect for long walks along the island.
What to Do at Faro Beach
- Birdwatching: The Ria Formosa side is a paradise for bird observation. Flamingos, herons, storks and waders are frequently spotted.
- Kitesurfing & Windsurfing: The eastern area, more exposed to wind, is popular for wind sports. Local schools offer lessons.
- Island walk: Walk east along the deserted beach — within minutes you leave the crowds behind and have kilometres of sand to yourself.
- Gastronomy: Faro Beach restaurants are famous for fresh seafood and cataplana. The sunset here, overlooking the Ria, is memorable.
- Kayaking the Ria: Rent a kayak to explore the Ria Formosa channels from the beach — the water perspective is completely different.

- The tide significantly affects beach width — at low tide it’s immense, at high tide it can be narrow in places
- Bring sunscreen and a hat — sand reflection is intense
- The lagoon side is ideal for small children: shallow water, no waves, warmer temperature
- Coming from the airport, there are lockers and showers in the restaurant area for storing luggage
- On windy days, choose the Ria side for shelter — the ocean side can be uncomfortable
