Praia da Ilha Deserta, also known as Barreta, is one of the most special beaches in the Algarve — an uninhabited island in the Ria Formosa, with about 7 km of white, untouched sand. It’s the southernmost point of mainland Portugal and has the highest rating in our selection, 4.9, along with a Blue Flag.
Getting there and parking
It can only be reached by boat, from Faro — there is no car access or parking. The crossing over the Ria Formosa is part of the experience, through the salt marshes and channels of the natural park.
The sand and the sea
Around 7 km of white, very fine, almost untouched sand meet calm to moderate water. As an island with no development, it keeps a rare wild character — ideal for anyone seeking peace and nature.
Facilities
Although uninhabited, it has a Blue Flag and minimal facilities by the pier during the bathing season. Beyond that, it’s virgin sand — worth bringing water and what you need for the day.
Where to eat
There is a beach restaurant by the landing point; otherwise the island is pure nature, so it’s worth planning your meal.
Nearby beaches
The mainland gateway is Praia de Faro, about 7 km away by water. In the same Ria Formosa lie the islands of Culatra and Armona, also reachable by boat.
Where to stay
As an uninhabited island, there is no accommodation on Barreta: the base is Faro, where the boats depart. Check hotel availability near Faro.
