Olhão Guide: Ria Formosa, Market & Islands [2026]
Why visit Olhão
Olhão is the Algarve’s largest fishing port and the gateway to the Ria Formosa — southern Portugal’s most important natural park. Less touristy than any other coastal Algarve town, Olhão offers the region’s most authentic fish market, barrier islands with near-deserted beaches, and seafood at local prices.
Things to do
Municipal Market
Two red-brick buildings by the harbour: the fish market (the Algarve’s largest, best early morning) and the fruit/vegetable market. Genuinely local experience.
Ria Formosa Islands
Regular ferries (15-30 min) to Armona and Culatra islands. Golden sand beaches nearly deserted, warm lagoon-side waters, and fishing villages with no paved roads. A world apart.
Old Town
Cubist architecture (North African influence), rooftop terraces, narrow streets. Viewpoints over the Ria Formosa.
Seafood
Olhão is the Algarve’s seafood capital. Cockles, clams, Ria Formosa oysters. The Seafood Festival (August) is the city’s biggest gastronomic event.
Getting there
- From Faro Airport: 10 km (~15 min)
- Regional train from Faro: 10 min, €1.50
