East vs West Algarve: Which Side to Choose for Your Holiday
East vs West Algarve — two different experiences
The Algarve naturally divides into two halves with very different personalities. The Barlavento (west), from Sagres to Albufeira, is the Algarve of dramatic cliffs, sea caves, and lively resorts. The Sotavento (east), from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António, is the Algarve of barrier islands, the Ria Formosa, and authentic fishing villages.
Choosing between east and west depends on the type of holiday you want. This guide compares both halves in detail. For a full geographical overview, see our Algarve map and regions guide.
Beaches
Western Algarve (Barlavento)
The Barlavento beaches are the most photogenic in the Algarve — and arguably all of Europe. Golden sandstone cliffs, natural arches, sea caves, and hidden coves define the coastline from Sagres to Albufeira. These are smaller, sheltered beaches with crystal-clear water and spectacular rock formations.

Highlights: Marinha, Benagil, Dona Ana, São Rafael, Amado (surfing)
Eastern Algarve (Sotavento)
The Sotavento beaches are completely different — long barrier islands of golden sand stretching for kilometres, bathed by the calm waters of the Ria Formosa. Many are only accessible by boat, keeping them less crowded. The sand is finer, the waters calmer, and the feeling more wild and untouched.
Highlights: Tavira Island, Desert Island, Culatra, Armona, Cacela Velha
Beach verdict
West for dramatic scenery, caves, and snorkelling. East for space, tranquillity, and untouched nature.
Towns and cities
West
The Barlavento has the most developed tourist towns: Albufeira (biggest and liveliest), Lagos (most complete), Carvoeiro (romantic), Portimão (gastronomic), and Sagres (wild). More tourist infrastructure, restaurants, nightlife, and accommodation options.
East
The Sotavento is less developed and more authentic. Tavira is the crown jewel — charming and historic. Faro is the real capital with local life. Olhão is the fishing town with the Algarve’s best seafood market.
Town verdict
West for variety, buzz, and infrastructure. East for authenticity, peace, and local life.
Prices
| West (Barlavento) | East (Sotavento) | |
|---|---|---|
| 3★ hotel (summer) | €80-150/night | €50-100/night |
| Meal (2 people) | €30-50 | €20-35 |
| Coffee with view | €1.50-2.50 | €1.00-1.50 |
The difference is most notable in August, when the Barlavento hits peak prices. In the Sotavento, even in high season, you’ll find good deals.
Activities
West — Action and adventure
- Boat trips to caves (Benagil, Ponta da Piedade)
- Surfing on the Vicentine Coast (Amado, Tonel)
- Nightlife in Albufeira and Lagos
- World-class golf (Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago)
- Water parks (Zoomarine, Slide & Splash)
East — Nature and culture
- Ria Formosa by boat, kayak, or on foot

Crowds
The Barlavento receives the vast majority of tourists, especially Albufeira, Lagos, and Vilamoura. In August, these areas get genuinely crowded.

The Sotavento is significantly calmer at any time of year. Even in August, beaches like Desert Island or Cacela Velha allow you to find space. If escaping crowds is a priority, the east wins hands down.
Which to choose?
| Choose the West if… | Choose the East if… |
|---|---|
| You want cliff beaches and caves | You prefer long, quiet beaches |
| You want nightlife | You value authenticity and local life |
| Travelling with kids (water parks) | You want lower prices |
| You want lots of restaurant options | You prefer fresh seafood and local eateries |
| You like golf | You like birdwatching and nature |
| It’s your first time in the Algarve | You already know the tourist Algarve |
| You want surfing (Vicentine Coast) | You prefer calm, shallow waters |
Or both?
The best strategy, if you have time, is to combine both. With a week, you can spend 3-4 nights in the west (based in Lagos or Albufeira) and 3-4 nights in the east (based in Tavira or Faro). The distance between Albufeira and Tavira is just 50 minutes by car.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Barlavento and Sotavento?
Barlavento (west) has cliff beaches, caves, and developed resorts. Sotavento (east) has island beaches, Ria Formosa, and authentic villages. Two completely different experiences within the same region.
Which side is better for families?
The west has more family activities (water parks, boat trips, entertainment). The east has calmer, safer beaches for children. Depends whether your family prefers action or tranquillity.
Are the western beaches more beautiful?
They’re more photogenic (cliffs, caves, rock formations). Eastern beaches are more extensive and untouched. “More beautiful” is subjective — they’re different kinds of beauty.
Do I need a car to explore both sides?
