How to calculate the total trip cost
The budget for a trip to São Miguel depends on variables each traveller defines: dates, type of accommodation, mode of transport on the island, meals and activities. There are no universal fixed values; the safe method is to sum costs by category and divide by participants when there are shared expenses.
Base formula
Total cost = (Return transport) + (Accommodation × nights) + (Local transport × days) + (Meals × days × people) + (Activities and tickets) + (Insurance and contingencies)
To obtain the cost per person, separate individual expenses (flight, meals, personal activities) from shared expenses (car hire, double room accommodation, fuel, parking). Sum the shared expenses and divide by the number of occupants; then add each individual’s personal expenses.
Budget table for completion
Copy this structure into a spreadsheet and fill in with the actual values you research. Leave cells blank to insert your numbers.
Scenario comparison by duration (variables)
Use the variables below to simulate 3, 5 and 7 nights. Replace each letter with the value you find in your research.
Key: p = number of people sharing shared costs (accommodation and car). Adjust At₃, At₅, At₇ according to the number of activities planned for each duration.
Choice of accommodation base and booking checks
The island is 62.1 km long and 15.8 km at its widest, with two mountainous areas separated by a low-altitude plateau. The location of the accommodation influences daily travel time to the main points of interest: Sete Cidades lagoons, Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas, Nordeste and the south coast.
- South coast (Ribeira Grande, Lagoa, Vila Franca do Campo): mix of hotels and rural tourism; good beaches (Pópulo, Vinha da Areia, Ribeira Quente, Amora, Viola, Lombo Gordo, Mosteiros), natural pools (Capelas, Calhetas, Lagoa, Ferraria with water heated by thermal springs) and islets (Ilhéu da Vila, Ilhéu dos Mosteiros).
Checks before booking:
- Confirm whether the accommodation includes breakfast and has a kitchen/kitchenette to reduce meal costs.
- Check cancellation policy, check-in/out times and whether there is free parking (essential if hiring a car).
- Ensure the type (hotel, rural tourism, rural tourism unit) matches the level of services and seclusion you are looking for.
- Check the actual driving distance to the main points of your daily itinerary.
- For long stays (7 nights), consider splitting the stay between two bases (e.g. 3-4 nights in the west/Ponta Delgada and 3-4 nights in the east/Furnas-Nordeste) to reduce daily mileage.
Expense control tips
- Book flights and car in advance to fix the two biggest variables.
- Prefer accommodation with a kitchen to prepare breakfasts and some dinners.
- Group activities by geographical zone on the same day to save fuel and time.
- Take a reusable bottle and snacks for trails and beaches.
- Check whether your credit card or travel insurance covers car hire and international medical assistance; avoid duplicating cover.
