Trains in the Algarve: stations, connections and destinations

To travel by train in the Algarve, confirm with CP the departure station, the destination and the service for your date. Also plan the journey between the station and your accommodation or visit.

New direct service between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António

Since 19 July 2026, the Algarve Line operates fully electrified, allowing direct journeys between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António without changing at Faro. The Regional service has been reinforced, especially at peak times, and the electric rolling stock ensures greater on-board comfort.

Main stations and stops

The full route serves more than 20 interfaces. In the west-east direction the highlights are: Lagos, Meia Praia, Portimão, Ferragudo, Estômbar-Lagoa, Silves, Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé, Almancil, Parque das Cidades, Faro, Olhão, Fuseta, Tavira, Conceição, Cacela, Castro Marim, Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António. In the opposite direction, the sequence is identical.

Some stops (e.g. Mexilhoeira Grande, Poço Barreto, Alcantarilha, Algoz, Boliqueime, Bom João, Fuseta-A, Livramento, Luz, Porta Nova) are served only by a portion of trains; check the timetable for the intended service.

Typical timetables and frequency

Regional trains (category R) run throughout the day, with approximate intervals of 60 to 90 minutes at peak demand. There is also an InterRegional service (no. 880/881) with more selective stops. Examples of departures from Lagos towards Faro/VRSA: 06:20, 07:05, 08:22, 10:34, 13:22, 15:22, 17:18, 18:22, 19:25, 20:22. In the opposite direction, Vila Real de Santo António has departures from 05:34 to 20:34. In Faro, the frequency is denser: trains roughly every hour between 07:00 and 22:10.

Editorial suggestion: always confirm the timetable for the day of travel on the CP website or app, as there are services with specific notes (e.g. weekdays, weekends, occasional cancellations).

Tickets and purchase channels

  • CP App (iOS/Android): immediate purchase, ticket on mobile via SMS.
  • Online ticket office (cp.pt): up to 60 days in advance.
  • Station ticket offices and Payshop agents (physical network).
  • CP Helpline: 24 h/day for purchase or information.

Exact prices are not indicated in the source; consult the channels above for current fares and any discounts (youth, senior, family, etc.).

Choosing the ideal base for exploring by train

The line allows overnight stays in different cities and return trips on the same day. The table below compares useful zones as a base, considering proximity to the station, timetable coverage and access to other networks (bus/taxi).

Planning option When to consider What to confirm
Public transport Intends to compare cost per person Consult the full route, any changes and the last return.
Pre-booked transfer Prefers to combine arrival in advance Request total quote with luggage, meeting point and delay conditions.
Car Intends to continue the journey to other destinations Compare hire, coverage, deposit and parking at the destination.

Editorial suggestion: if the aim is to maximise train journeys, Faro offers the greatest timetable flexibility. For a focus on beaches and a quieter atmosphere, Tavira or Lagos work well, provided you plan returns according to the last train.

Practical planning tips

  1. Download the CP App for paperless tickets and disruption alerts.
  2. Buy in advance at the online ticket office if travelling in high season (summer, holidays).
