Choosing the pace of the day in Furnas

Furnas comprises a locality, a lake and garden and thermal water areas. The best way to organise a first visit is to choose what you want to do with your time: a walk on the lake, a garden with thermal bath or a longer walk. The plan changes according to this choice.

This guide proposes combining the lake and the locality with a main experience. A full day of walking requires different organisation and may not leave room for several entries and a leisurely meal. A visit to Furnas should have its own place in the itinerary, rather than being a rushed extension of Sete Cidades.

Lake, hot springs and cozido

At Furnas Lake, the landscape and geothermal activity help to understand the link between the valley and the volcano. The official trail sheet describes the Hot Springs area as the place where cozido is prepared using ground heat. Seeing this area and eating the dish at a restaurant are different choices.

If cozido is part of your plan, book the meal with the restaurant and adapt the walk to the confirmed time. Do not rely on a specific observation of the preparation nor on a table available simply by arriving at the lake. You can visit part of the shore and then go to the locality, without completing the full walking trail.

Terra Nostra Park: garden and thermal bath

The Terra Nostra Park is located in the Furnas valley and combines a botanical garden with a thermal pool. It makes sense to reserve a block of time for the park, rather than using it as a quick stop between several visits. Choose first whether you want to walk in the garden, take a bath or combine both.

Check at the park itself for the ticket office, access rules and current conditions. Bring what you need for the chosen activity and allow time to prepare before returning. A room in a local hotel should not be interpreted as automatic access to all areas: check the inclusions of the rate.

The Furnas Lake trail

The official PRC06SMI trail is circular and links the locality to the lake. The sheet describes points such as Santana Church, Pico do Milho and Ermida de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. It also includes sections alongside the road, so it does not correspond only to a short, flat loop around the shore.

Before opting for the full trail, consult the current Azores Trails sheet and the trail condition. Use the walk as the core of the day. For a programme with garden and meal, choose a shorter walk and organise the links between the locations.

A proposal without tight schedules

Start by the lake area and devote the morning to it according to your chosen transport. Then have the meal in the locality, if you have booked it. In the afternoon, choose Terra Nostra Park or another confirmed visit. This sequence is a flexible proposal and can be inverted according to tickets and the day’s conditions.

If you are going without a car, compare a Furnas excursion with the plan you intend to make. Pick-up, meal, garden and thermal bath may be included, optional or excluded from the programme. Consult the transport guide before finalising bookings.

Visiting or staying in Furnas

Staying in Furnas gives more space to distribute gardens and experiences across two moments of your stay. In the selection of accommodations in São Miguel, the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel and the Octant Furnas are two options located in the valley. Compare on the partner the services, typologies and access conditions.

If you prefer a single base, organise Furnas as a day in the 5-day itinerary. SunRoamy presents editorial proposals and external links; each reservation and payment is handled separately by the partner.
