Before following the itinerary
This proposal organises 5 full days in São Miguel. It is a flexible editorial plan, not a travel package. Choose the order according to the weather, your accommodation location and confirmed bookings. If flights take up part of your stay, reduce the programme instead of trying to keep all stops.
Day 1: Ponta Delgada
Use the first day to get to know Ponta Delgada, stroll along the seafront and organise your stay. The proposal assumes full days; if you arrive late, move this walk to another time. Confirm your accommodation address and activity meeting points before finalising the plan.
Day 2: Sete Cidades and the west
Choose Sete Cidades as the core of the day and adjust viewpoints to visibility. A walk in the locality can replace a mountain stop when there is cloud. Consider Mosteiros as an extension, if you have time and if coastal conditions are suitable.
Day 3: Furnas
Dedicate the day to the Furnas valley. Combine visits to the locality and the lake with a garden or thermal space, according to available bookings. Avoid scheduling several spaces with close times: travel, meals and queues also take up part of the day.
Day 4: Lagoa do Fogo and Ribeira Grande
Reserve this day for the central zone and the north coast. Check the current access rules for Lagoa do Fogo before setting out, as seasonal measures may apply. If visibility does not help, spend more time on Ribeira Grande and save the lake for the flexible day.
Day 5: experience and margin for changes
Choose a whale-watching outing, an excursion or a more relaxed walk. Sea activities depend on conditions and may be altered by the operator. This day also serves to recover a visit that has been postponed, without trying to fit in all options.
How to adapt the trip
Compare bases in the guide where to stay and choose between driving, using public transport or booking excursions in the guide of transport. Each option implies a different pace. For activities with a meeting point and cancellation conditions, consult what to do in São Miguel.
Before a trail, check its condition and the fact sheet in the official Azores Trails portal. Do not use a suggested itinerary as confirmation of access, opening or sea conditions.
