To choose what to do in Porto, divide the city into geographical blocks. São Bento, the Cathedral, Clérigos, Bolhão and Ribeira can guide a programme through the centre; Gaia, Serralves and Foz add different experiences. You do not need to include all in the same day for a varied visit.
Baixa, Bolhão and Clérigos
Use the Baixa as a starting point to combine streets, squares and indoor visits. The Bolhão Market remains a fresh food market: treat the visit as an encounter with a trading space, respecting traders and customers. Add the area to Rua de Santa Catarina, if it makes sense in your route.
Clérigos can be a priority for those seeking heritage and views, but check the specific conditions of the tower, church and museum. The existence of a ticket for sale does not replace confirming opening on the chosen day. Climbing the tower also requires evaluating if access suits the group.
São Bento, Cathedral and Ribeira
These references help design a walk through the historic centre. If you start in a higher area and end near the river, plan how to return to accommodation. Descending first does not eliminate the climb at the end of the day, especially with tired children or luggage.
Distinguish appreciating the exterior of a building from visiting its interior. For any paid monument, check with the operator before fitting the booking between two walks. São Bento is a station in use: keep access routes clear and respect passenger movement.

Gaia: walk and lodge visit
On the other side of the Douro, Gaia allows organising a walk along the quay and a visit linked to Port wine. Lodges do not all have the same location or ticket. Decide if you want a guided visit, an audio guide route or another experience offered by the operator.
The Gaia and lodges guide shows how to compare formats. Tasting is a separate choice from interest in heritage; confirm alternatives when travelling with minors or not intending to consume alcohol. Do not confuse this urban block with an excursion to the Douro region.
Serralves and Foz: giving time to another zone
Serralves presents a museum, park, house and Cinema House, with visit conditions to check on its site. Choose the space or set of spaces that interests you instead of assuming any ticket covers everything. The exhibition programme should also be confirmed close to the trip.
Foz can be considered for an Atlantic walk, with planned outbound and return transport. A coastal visit does not imply entering the sea. For the beach, check signage, local conditions and lifeguarding; for walking, adjust the route to wind, rain and group comfort.
Choosing when time is short
For two days, use the Porto itineraries and choose one or two priority indoor visits. If the forecast indicates rain, change the order of blocks instead of crossing the city several times. The time guide helps distinguish climate and forecast.
Confirm the transport connection and the potential usefulness of the Porto.CARD after deciding the visits. The main guide gathers the remaining choices and the Douro guide explains when it is worth reserving a day outside the city.
