Sagres Guide: Cape, Surfing & Cliffs [2026]

Why visit Sagres

Sagres is the end of the world — literally. This small village at Europe’s southwestern tip, next to Cape St Vincent, offers something no other Algarve destination has: dramatic cliffs battered by the Atlantic, a wild untouched atmosphere, the Algarve’s best surfing, and sunsets that feel like the edge of the planet.

With only ~2,000 residents, Sagres is the opposite of Albufeira. No resorts, no Strip — just raw nature, surf and deep calm.

Things to do

Cape St Vincent

The southwestern-most point of mainland Europe. Lighthouse with 95 km range (Europe’s most powerful), 75-metre cliffs and breathtaking views. Best at sunset. Lighthouse is open to visitors. Free entry.

Sagres Fortress

Built in 1453 by order of Henry the Navigator. Wind compass on the ground (43 metres diameter), chapel, and walking path to the promontory’s edge. Entry: €3. Spectacular views.

Surfing

Sagres is the Algarve’s #1 surf destination. Praia do Tonel (exposed beach break), Zavial (reef, advanced) and Amado (20 min away, most consistent). Surf schools for all levels. See our surf guide.

Beaches

  • Tonel — Next to fortress, surf and dramatic views
  • Mareta — Sagres’ “town beach”, more sheltered
  • Martinhal — Family-friendly, calmer waters
  • Beliche — Small, between cliffs, fewer people

Hiking

The Rota Vicentina long-distance trail passes through Sagres. The Fishermen’s Trail along the cliffs is spectacular — do sections of 2-4 hours.

Practical information

  • Getting there: 115 km from Faro Airport (~1h15 via toll-free A22 + EN268). No direct public transport — car needed.
  • Where to eat: Fish restaurants at the harbour. Cataplana and percebes (barnacles) are specialities. Reasonable prices (€12-20 main course).
  • Wind: Sagres is windy, especially afternoons. Bring a jacket even in summer.

FAQ

Is Sagres worth visiting?

Yes, if you enjoy nature, surfing or dramatic landscapes. Not a party or resort destination — it’s the Algarve at its wildest and most authentic. Ideal as a day trip or 2-3 night stay.

Is Sagres windy?

Yes, especially in the afternoon. It’s the Algarve’s most exposed point. Bring a jacket and expect wind on the cliffs. Mornings are usually calmer.
