The Algarve is one of Europe’s best birdwatching destinations, thanks to the Ria Formosa — an 18,000-hectare natural park home to over 200 bird species. Flamingos, herons, white storks, ospreys and the rare purple gallinule are observable year-round.
Best locations
- Ria Formosa (Olhão/Faro) — The main hotspot. Flamingos in winter, waders year-round. Marim Environmental Education Centre (entry: €5).
- Ludo/Quinta do Lago — Boardwalk trail in the Ria Formosa. Flamingos, herons and waterbirds. Free access.
- Sapal de Castro Marim — Nature reserve on the Spanish border. Flamingos, storks, kites. Less visited.
- Sagres — Migration point in October. Raptors, storks and passerines. Sagres Birdwatching Festival (October).

- Best season — October to March for migrants and flamingos. Spring for breeding. Year-round is good.

Yes. Greater flamingos are resident in the Ria Formosa, especially in winter (Nov-Mar). Best spots are Ludo/Quinta do Lago and Olhão. Flocks of 50-200 birds are common.
