Birdwatching in the Algarve: Ria Formosa & Flamingos [2026]

Birdwatching in the Algarve

The Algarve is one of Europe’s best birdwatching destinations, thanks to the Ria Formosa — an 18,000-hectare natural park home to over 200 bird species. Flamingos, herons, white storks, ospreys and the rare purple gallinule are observable year-round.

Best locations

  • Ria Formosa (Olhão/Faro) — The main hotspot. Flamingos in winter, waders year-round. Marim Environmental Education Centre (entry: €5).
  • Ludo/Quinta do Lago — Boardwalk trail in the Ria Formosa. Flamingos, herons and waterbirds. Free access.
  • Sapal de Castro Marim — Nature reserve on the Spanish border. Flamingos, storks, kites. Less visited.
  • Sagres — Migration point in October. Raptors, storks and passerines. Sagres Birdwatching Festival (October).

Practical information

  • Best season — October to March for migrants and flamingos. Spring for breeding. Year-round is good.
  • Guided tours — €30-60/person (half day). Companies: A Rocha, Algarve Birdwatching.
  • Equipment — Binoculars essential. Field guide recommended.
