Algarve with Kids: 12 Activities the Whole Family Will Love

A family holiday in the Algarve is one of the most reliable combinations there is. The climate, the calm beaches, and the variety of activities make this region a destination that works for children of all ages — from babies to teenagers who already think everything is boring. Here are 12 programmes that actually work.

1. Zoomarine (Guia, Albufeira)

The Algarve’s most complete aquatic and marine life park is in Guia, just minutes from Albufeira. Dolphins, seals, parrots and animal shows share space with water slides and pools. One full day isn’t enough for everything. Open from April to October, with extended hours in summer. Prices: adults around €33, children €25 (vary by season — check the official website).

Parking is free and spacious. Bring food — the restaurants inside the park are expensive.

2. Slide & Splash (Lagoa)

One of the oldest water parks in the Algarve — and still one of the best. Located in Lagoa, easily accessible via the A22. Radical water slides, lazy river, toddler area, and wave pools. The combination works for all ages.

Open from May to October. Prices around €25-30 for adults and €18-22 for children. Arrive early — the parking area fills up by late morning on hot July and August days.

3. Aquashow (Quarteira)

In Quarteira, Aquashow combines a water park with an animal area and rides. It has one of the country’s biggest water slides. Good option for very hot days when the beach isn’t enough. Prices and schedules on the official website — open from June to September.

4. Lagos Zoo

Lagos Zoo, in Barão de São João, is about 15 minutes from Lagos and is a visit children love. Primates, reptiles, exotic birds and farm animals. The grounds are green and pleasant, with shade — good for hot days. Open all year. Check winter hours on the website.

5. Krazy World (Algoz)

Near Algoz, Krazy World is an activity park with mini-golf, pools, animals, football pitches and plenty of room to run around. Less well-known than the big parks, but kids love it — and the atmosphere is more relaxed. Open all year (reduced hours in winter).

6. Boat trips from Lagos

The catamarans from Bom Dia, departing from Lagos Marina, are an excellent choice for families. The boats are spacious, stable and safe. The most popular tour passes through the caves and cliffs of Ponta da Piedade — a ninety-minute trip that children (and parents) will talk about for years.

Prices around €25-30 for adults and €15 for younger children. Booking essential in summer.

7. Dolphin Watching in Albufeira

Seeing wild dolphins in the sea is an experience children never forget. Several specialised dolphin watching boats depart from Albufeira — sightings are frequent along the Algarve coast, especially from April to October. Most tours last 2 hours and cost around €35 per adult and €20 per child.

Choose licensed operators that follow animal approach rules — there’s a real difference in quality and respect for the dolphins.

8. FIESA Festival (Pêra)

FIESA — International Sand Sculpture Festival — takes place annually in Pêra (Silves) and is a unique attraction. Giant sculptures made from sand, with themes that change each year. Illuminated at night. Children are fascinated by the dimensions and detail. Usually from May to October — check dates on the official website.

9. Armação de Pêra Beach

For family beach days, Armação de Pêra is one of the best choices in the central Algarve. The beach is huge, has calm waters in the central area, lifeguards, restaurants just metres from the sand, and reasonable parking. In August it’s packed — go early in the morning to secure a spot.

10. Praia da Rocha (Portimão)

One of the Algarve’s most famous beaches — and with good reason. Golden sand, imposing cliffs, and plenty of space even in August. The Portimão area has all the infrastructure families need: restaurants, toilets, showers, and easy access. The promenade above the beach is perfect for pushchair walks.

11. Meia Praia (Lagos)

At nearly four kilometres long, Meia Praia is the ideal beach for families who want space. The waters are generally calm, there’s windsurfing and stand-up paddling for older kids, and you can always find a quiet corner. Parking is ample and free outside peak season.

12. Historic train ride (Lagos–Faro)

A different suggestion: taking the CP train between Lagos and Faro (or part of the route) is a way to see the Algarve interior and some of the region’s most beautiful estuaries. Children love train journeys, and the route passes through Portimão, Silves, Albufeira and other interesting stops. Affordable tickets, booking recommended in summer.

General tips for family holidays in the Algarve

  • Avoid July and August at the most popular attractions — June and September have great weather and far fewer crowds
  • At beaches, always check the flags before entering the water
  • Always bring water and sunscreen — the Algarve sun is stronger than it looks
  • For water parks, arriving at opening time makes all the difference
  • Many restaurants have children’s menus — always ask when you enter

The Algarve is just the right size for a family holiday — everything is nearby, there’s variety for all tastes, and children rarely get bored. The challenge is the opposite: choosing what to leave for the next visit.
