Praia do Alemão, officially named Praia do Barranco das Canas, is the most tranquil beach west of Portimão. Its nickname comes from a German who was the first to build a house nearby. With a 4.4 rating, it stands out for its scenery: yellow-orange cliffs covered in pines, carved into arches, caves and coves.

Getting there and parking

It’s about a 10-minute drive from Portimão, with free parking next to the beach. From the car park, a short dirt path leads down to the sand, with no steps involved. It sits just over 1 km from Praia da Rocha, also reachable on foot via a scenic route.

The sand and the cliffs

Around 500 metres of fine golden sand meet calm water, and the beach holds the Blue Flag. At the western end there are rock formations and caves, and along the clifftop runs the “Varandas Sobre o Mar” trail, with viewpoints over the coast.

Facilities

Lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season, along with toilets and sunbed and umbrella hire.
