Praia do Vau is one of Portimão’s best-loved beaches, tucked between red and copper-toned cliffs that give it an unmistakable setting. It sits about 2 km west of the busy Praia da Rocha, yet feels far calmer and more family-friendly — reflected in its 4.5 rating and its Blue Flag, awarded every year for water quality and safety.

Getting there and parking

You reach it from the western side of Portimão, following the signs from Praia da Rocha, with free parking next to the sand. Access is via a wooden walkway and steps down the cliff; there is also a ramp for wheelchairs and pushchairs, with a boardwalk across the sand towards the shoreline.

The sand and the sea

Around 700 metres of fine golden sand meet calm, clear water — ideal conditions for families with young children. Along the cliff top runs a coastal path well worth walking in the late afternoon, with views over the rock formations.

Facilities

The beach is well equipped: toilets, outdoor showers, changing rooms, and sunbed and umbrella hire. Lifeguards are on duty during the bathing season. For more than just sunbathing, there is paddleboard and pedal-boat hire.

Where to eat

Right on the sand you’ll find beach restaurants and bars such as O Búzio and NoSoloÁgua Beach Club, serving fresh seafood and Portuguese dishes with an ocean view.

Nearby beaches

Just a short walk east lies Praia do Alemão, only 300 metres away. Praia dos Três Irmãos and Praia da Rocha are under 2 km, and Praia de Alvor about 3 km — easy to combine more than one beach in a day.

Where to stay

Jardim do Vau (4 stars) is about 160 metres from the sand, and there are several apartments nearby, such as Coral do Vau and Solar do Vau. Check hotel availability near Praia do Vau.
