Meia Praia (Lagos) — Complete Guide 2026

★ 4.6

Meia Praia is Lagos’ largest beach and one of the longest in the entire Algarve — four kilometres of golden sand stretching from Lagos marina to the Ria de Alvor estuary. Unlike the cliff-backed cove beaches that characterise Lagos, Meia Praia is open, flat and generous, ideal for families, water sports and long sunset walks.

Why Visit Meia Praia

While Lagos’ famous beaches — Dona Ana, Camilo — are small coves between cliffs, Meia Praia is the opposite: immense, open and breezy. It’s where Lagos locals go when they want space — even in August you can find your own stretch of sand by walking a few minutes east.

The southern exposure guarantees all-day sun, and the water, more sheltered than the Costa Vicentina, is among the warmest in the Algarve. It’s also Lagos’ water sports hub: kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP, kayaking and jet skiing.

How to Get There

From Lagos centre, Meia Praia is 5 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot via the marina. The regional train line has a stop right at the beach (Meia Praia halt). Water taxis also run from Lagos marina in summer.

Facilities

  • Toilets: Yes, at beach restaurants

  • Sun loungers: Available for hire
  • Lifeguard: June to September
  • Showers: Yes, at several points
  • Sports: Kitesurfing, windsurfing, SUP and kayak schools

What to Do

  • Kitesurfing & Windsurfing: Excellent wind conditions, especially in the eastern half. Several certified schools operate on the beach.
  • Stand-Up Paddle: On calm mornings, SUP is perfect here — flat water and views to the Lagos cliffs.
  • Sunset walk: 4 km of sand at the end of the day, with the sun dropping into the Atlantic.
  • Horse riding: Organised rides on the eastern end, near the Ria de Alvor.

Practical Tips

  • The beach is windy — bring a windbreak if you have small children
  • The eastern end is quieter and more natural, without beach bars
  • The train stops at the beach — one of the most practical ways to arrive without a car
  • Free parking in dirt car parks along the 4 km stretch
