How much does it cost to travel to Madeira: plan your budget

The cost of visiting Madeira depends on your dates, number of people and chosen bookings. Instead of an average that may not match your trip, fill in a budget with real quotes and compare the total per person.

Calculate the total without counting expenses twice

Add return travel, accommodation, local transport, meals, entry fees and a contingency for changes. Accommodation and a shared car count once for the group; individual tickets and meals count per person. A room per night and a price per person per night are different units: confirm which you are using.

Group formula: total = individual return trips + accommodation per night × nights + local transport + meals + activities + contingency. Average cost per person = group total ÷ participants. For families, keep actual adult and child prices separate instead of applying an equal split to all entries.

Compare a short stay with more nights

Run two simulations with the same arrival dates and different durations. Return trips remain in both budgets; adding nights increases accommodation and meals and may change transport. Compare the final total, not just the daily rate shown by the accommodation.

If the trip has three, five or seven nights, count the actual days of meals and excursions. The arrival day may have only one meal and the departure day may not allow visits. Do not automatically multiply all costs by the number of nights.

Decisions that change the budget

Compare car hire, ad-hoc transfers and organised tours according to the specific destinations in your programme. Include airport access and the return from each walk. Do not assume a bus reaches the start of your intended trail.

Official classified PR routes require advance booking. Check the official platform, the price applicable to your case and the trail status before paying or arranging transport. A booking does not allow use of a closed trail.

Review conditions before paying

For accommodation, confirm occupancy, meal plan, fees and cancellation terms. For transport, include luggage, fuel, parking or journeys to stops. For activities, confirm exactly what the ticket includes and whether you need to book a session.

If considering a visitor pass, first add up the tickets for the sites you actually intend to visit. Compare that sum with the current price and conditions of the pass. A discount on a visit you would not make does not represent a saving on your programme. Keep a contingency of your choosing and update the table when you confirm each booking.
