Madeira without a car: where to stay and how to explore

It is possible to plan a trip to Madeira without hiring a car, but the itinerary must match the available transport. Compare a base in Funchal with the outings you intend to make and organise the return for each day before booking accommodation or activities.

Choose the base according to the itinerary

For a plan with visits in Funchal and some organised outings, compare accommodation in the city with the activity departure points. Check the exact address and the walking route: being in the same city does not mean all journeys are convenient for your group.

If a walk or another destination outside the city is essential, sort the transport first. Compare the accommodation location with the outward and return journey for that activity, including luggage and any mobility requirements.

Compare transport options

Visit Madeira lists buses, taxis, ride-hailing services, organised tours and vehicle hire among the options for getting around. Compare the specific mode for each outing, rather than assuming the whole island has the same offer.

For buses, confirm the operator, stops, timetables for the chosen day and the last return. For taxis or ride-hailing services, check the price or request a quote for the journey. For a tour, confirm pick-up, duration, programme and cancellation conditions.

Separate transport from visits

The Funchal and Botanical Garden cable cars appear among the visit options presented by the official tourism body. Check the boarding points and current conditions for each service: they do not replace all the journeys planned in the itinerary.

A tourist activity is not equivalent to a regular transport link. If you intend to use it to reach another location, confirm the service allows that programme and organise the continuation and return.

Prepare walks and day changes

Identify the start and end of the walk before arranging transport. Do not assume the route finishes near the starting point nor that a compatible bus exists for the finish. Arrange the return and change conditions with the provider.

Consult the factsheet and current status of the route on official channels. If conditions do not permit the activity, reorganise the programme; having transport booked does not allow entry to a closed trail.

Organise the budget and arrival

Compare the total cost of buses, hired transfers and tours for the number of people in the group. Avoid comparing an individual ticket with a service booked for several people without adjusting to the same calculation basis.

For arrival and departure, confirm the link between the airport and accommodation at your flight times. Include luggage, meeting point, delays and time for check-in. Allow margin on the departure day and prepare an alternative for changes.
