Buses in the Algarve: how to use the regional network

To use buses in the Algarve, search the route between addresses and confirm the stop, the timetable and the return. The name of a locality is not enough to identify the connection you need.

Direct connections from Faro Airport

Faro Airport (FAO) provides buses linking the terminal to Faro centre and destinations to the west. According to official airport information, there is the Vamus Aerobus service with routes towards Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. To continue by train, you must take a bus or taxi to Faro railway station, as there is no train platform at the terminal. Long-distance connections by Rede Expressos towards Seville are also listed.

Editorial suggestion: confirm timetables, stops and tickets directly with each operator on the day of travel, as published information may not reflect seasonal or last-minute changes.

Route planning with Neso

Editorial suggestion: use Neso to sketch the trip framework, then validate timetables on the websites or apps of the specific operators (Vamus, EVA Transportes, Frota Azul, among others) before leaving your accommodation.

Choosing your accommodation base according to the bus network

As frequency and coverage vary between the coast and the interior, the accommodation location determines the ease of daily journeys. Consider these profiles:

Editorial suggestion: if you intend to do without a car, prioritise accommodation within a 5-10 minute walk of a stop with several lines or the city bus terminal. Check on the Neso map whether the nearest stop has weekend and evening service.

Decision table: where to stay for bus travel

Planning option When to consider What to confirm
Public transport Want to compare cost per person Check the full route, any changes and the last return.
Pre-booked transfer Prefer to arrange arrival in advance Request total quote with luggage, meeting point and delay conditions.
Car Want to continue the trip to other destinations Compare hire, cover, deposit and parking at the destination.

Essential checks before booking accommodation

  1. Actual walking distance to the stop or terminal most used in your itinerary (use maps with walking mode).
  2. Lines serving that stop on Neso: confirm they cover your destinations of interest.
  3. Night return option: if you plan to dine in another town, ensure there is a return bus or alternative (taxi/ride-hailing).

Editorial suggestion: contact the accommodation before booking and ask which bus stop is most used by guests and whether timetables are displayed at reception.
