Burgau and Salema: guide to the villages of the western Algarve
To choose between Burgau and Salema, compare the beach, accommodation location and the outings you want. Official tourism places both on the western stretch of the Ecovia do Litoral, as fishing villages. You do not need to walk the whole Ecovia to organise a stay in this area.
Burgau: beach and village in the same programme
Praia do Burgau is described by VisitPortugal as a former fishing harbour area, sheltered between cliffs and integrated into the village. Use the beach as a reference to choose an outing and a rest block, according to local conditions.
Compare the actual route from the accommodation to the sand and to meals. A listing that says it is near the beach must be checked against the map and your mobility needs. Confirm parking, arrival and check-in before booking.
Salema and the comparison between bases
In the Ecovia description, Salema and Burgau feature on the return of the route to the coast before Lagos. If you want to know both, choose one as a base and organise the other as a separate visit, after confirming transport.
Do not decide only by the daily price of an accommodation. Compare the unit, the booking conditions and the routes for the remaining days. If you want to cook, confirm the equipment; if you prefer eating out, check the offer and opening times of the places you choose.
A three-day programme, without filling every hour
Day one: arrival, getting to know the base and a short beach or walking block. Day two: visit the other village, if the connection and conditions are suitable. Day three: choose to repeat the preferred beach or add a walk compatible with the time available.
If you want to walk or cycle on the Ecovia, choose a specific section and confirm the route and current conditions. The existence of the route does not guarantee that all segments have the same surface or suit any bicycle. Organise the return and avoid relying on an unverified connection.
