Vila Real de Santo António: complete guide

To visit Vila Real de Santo Antonio, start by choosing the stops that fit the time available. Confirm the return transport before combining the town with other destinations.

Why visit Vila Real de Santo António

The city was born from a royal plan after the 1755 earthquake, applying standardised architectural modules and prefabricated stonework from Lisbon. The result is a rare orthogonal grid in the Algarve, centred on Praça Marquês de Pombal with radial cobblestones from the 1776 obelisk. There the church, the Town Hall and the former Guard House are concentrated. The urban route ends at the former Customs House building, beside the landscaped banks of the River Guadiana.

Praia de Santo António

Located by the Guadiana mouth, it forms part of a continuous sandy stretch of about 12 km extending to the Ria Formosa. The sea has warm, calm waters, and the National Forest surrounds the beach, bringing shade and a scent of pine.

Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António Sapal Natural Reserve

First natural reserve declared in mainland Portugal. The Guadiana branches into creeks and channels, creating habitat for fish, crustaceans, molluscs and birds such as white stork, flamingo and black-winged stilt (symbol of the reserve). The Interpretation Centre proposes walking or cycling routes to artisanal salt pans and agricultural areas with carob, fig and almond trees. Castro Marim castle offers a panoramic view over the reserve and the Pombaline city.

Regional train (Algarve Line)

Vila Real de Santo António station is the terminus of the Algarve Line. Regional trains connect to Lagos, with stops at Portimão, Tunes, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Castro Marim and Monte Gordo. The timetable in force since 19 July 2026 provides departures from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António throughout the day and returns from the city from 05:34, with regular departures until 20:34. Always check the current timetable on the CP website before travelling.
