Travel insurance for the Algarve: which to choose, by type of traveller
A guide by traveller profile to choose the right travel insurance for the Algarve, with the limits of the European Health Insurance Card explained by the official source.
In the Algarve, the right insurance depends on who is travelling. A week’s holiday from an EU country, more than three months working from here and an expensive trip booked six months in advance are three different risks, and they require different policies. Find your situation in the table and jump to the section that applies to you.
This guide contains affiliate links to Heymondo. If you take out a policy through them, you get a 5% discount and SunRoamy receives a commission, without you paying more for it. The product descriptions come from the material that Heymondo provides to partners.
| Your situation | Product to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A trip with fixed dates, under 90 days | Per-trip insurance, with four levels: Assistance Only, Standard, Top and Premium | Which level covers baggage and the activities you actually plan to do |
| Several trips throughout the year | Annual insurance, in Standard and Premium versions | The maximum duration of each trip fixed in the contract |
| Stay over 90 days or without a return date | Long-stay insurance | The initial contracted period and renewal from abroad |
| Expensive trip, booked well in advance | Cancellation insurance | Whether your reason is among the more than 40 justified causes |
There is a common rule across the whole range: no policy covers more than 365 consecutive days without renewal or a new contract.
The European Health Insurance Card is not insurance
If you are covered by the healthcare system of an EU country, the European Health Insurance Card gives you access to public healthcare during a temporary stay. It is free: request it from your health authority before leaving home and be wary of any site that charges you for it. The European Commission lists what the card does not do.
- It does not cover rescue or repatriation. For transport back home after a serious illness or accident, you need separate insurance.
- It does not cover private healthcare. It only applies to providers in the public system.
- It does not cover planned treatment in another country.
- Search and rescue expenses are your responsibility. The Commission itself illustrates this with an example: a Swedish traveller left with the full bill for a mountain rescue.
Travel insurance helps cover part of these gaps, especially medical expenses and repatriation. Check the policy to see what is included. On our page about travel insurance for the Algarve we explain the rest of the context.
One or two weeks, coming from an EU country
This is the most common case. You have the European Health Insurance Card for public emergencies and you need to cover baggage, transport delays and the possibility of ending up in a private clinic, which the card does not pay for. A Standard per-trip policy is designed for European destinations and is the natural starting point. If you are carrying expensive electronic equipment or want higher medical limits, the next level is Top, which includes baggage with electronic equipment, full repatriation and legal assistance abroad.
Coming from outside the European Union
Without the European Health Insurance Card, the cost of any medical episode comes out of your pocket or your insurance. This is where Top level makes most sense, due to high medical limits and repatriation. Premium exists for complex destinations or for those travelling with high-value baggage, such as photographic or sports equipment.
Family with children
For a family holiday with fixed dates, the product is per-trip insurance, as with any other trip. What changes are the discounts: Heymondo offers a 15% family discount and the 5% from our link always stacks with it. For groups, discounts range from 5% to 15%. Also check with your health system how far coverage extends to your family members.
Surfing, diving, kayaking and other high-risk activities
Here the small print matters. If you plan to do water sports or adventure activities, check that they are expressly included in the policy before taking it out. In long-stay policies, adventure sports are included in the base cover; in others, check level by level.
Staying more than three months
Digital nomads, Erasmus students, volunteers and people on a sabbatical do not fit per-trip insurance. The right product is long-stay insurance, designed for trips over 90 days or without a return date. It is taken out for an initial minimum period, for example 90 days, and renewed from abroad, without needing to return to your home country. The 365-day limit per policy still applies.
Travelling several times a year
If the Algarve is just one of many trips you make a year, above what is a normal holiday season, it is worth comparing annual cover with buying a policy each time. Annual insurance covers all trips made over 12 months with a single policy. The rule to remember is that each individual trip has a maximum duration fixed in the contract, usually 30, 60 or 90 days, and you must return home before setting off again.
You booked the trip well in advance
For a honeymoon or an August holiday rental paid for in January, the money leaves your account long before the trip starts. Cancellation insurance covers this risk. It reimburses what you have already spent on flights, hotels and excursions when the trip does not happen, for more than 40 justified causes, including health, work and legal reasons.
You live in Portugal and are going on holiday to the Algarve
Start by checking what your usual health coverage already resolves within the country and focus on what it does not cover. Also confirm whether the policy covers trips within your country of residence, because not all do. What a policy can add here is mainly cancellation, baggage and cover for high-risk activities. If your holiday is by car, without expensive non-refundable bookings, first look at how much money is actually at risk before deciding.
What to check before taking out a policy
- Whether the sports and activities you plan to do are expressly included in the policy.
- The maximum duration of each trip, if you choose annual insurance.
- Who pays the hospital. With Heymondo, in a medical emergency you call assistance first and they handle payment directly with the hospital, without you having to pay upfront and claim reimbursement later.
- How to get help abroad. The Heymondo app allows free assistance calls over the internet, useful to avoid roaming charges, and has chat available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- The 365-day consecutive limit per policy, if your trip is long.
