Algarve Caves: How to Visit Benagil and Other Sea Caves

Benagil Cave is probably the most shared image of the entire Algarve. A massive cavern with a white sand beach inside and a round hole in the ceiling that lets sunlight pour in. It looks like something out of a film. And it’s real.

But Benagil isn’t the only sea cave along the Algarve coast. There’s an entire network of caverns, arches and passages carved into the golden rock between Portimão and Albufeira. Some are famous. Others are virtually unknown. This guide tells you everything you need to know to visit them — and how to choose the best way to get there.

Benagil Cave: what is it, exactly

Technically, Benagil Cave is an algar — a sea cave with a natural hole in the ceiling. The sea entered through the base of the cliff over millennia, hollowed out the interior, and the roof eventually collapsed at a central point. The result is a natural chamber about 20 metres high, with light streaming in from above, and a small sandy beach inside.

There’s no land access. No path along the cliff. The only way in is from the water — and that’s what makes it special.

How to get to the cave: boat, kayak or SUP?

You have three main options, each with its own advantages. The choice depends on your fitness level, budget, and what you want to do inside the cave.

Boat (the easiest option)

The simplest — and most common — way is to catch one of the boats that leave directly from Benagil Beach. These are small motorboats carrying groups of 6 to 12 people. The trip lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour, passing through Benagil Cave and other caverns along the coast. Prices are around €20 to €30 per person.

You can also take larger boat excursions from Albufeira Marina — these are longer tours (2 to 3 hours) covering more coastline and costing between €25 and €40. The downside: they stop at the cave entrance without going in, because the larger boats can’t fit inside.

Several operators run departures from Benagil, including Cave Boat Benagil and Sea Xplorer, as well as local boatmen you’ll find directly on the beach. Book in advance during summer — queues can be long.

Kayak or SUP (the most immersive option)

If you want to enter the cave, stop, explore at your own pace and truly feel the scale of the place — kayak or SUP is clearly the best choice. You can paddle through the water-level opening, reach the sandy beach inside, and spend a few minutes without boats around you.

Kayak tours typically depart from Benagil or Carvoeiro and last between 2 and 3 hours. Prices: €35 to €45 per person. Several operators offer this service in the Carvoeiro and Lagoa area. You’ll need reasonable fitness — the paddle back, against the current, can be demanding.

For SUP, conditions need to be calm. With swell, it’s not recommended — and operators will cancel when the sea isn’t favourable.

Swimming — officially discouraged

Many people try to swim from Benagil Beach to the cave. The distance is about 200 metres. It’s tempting. But the maritime authorities officially discourage this option. Boat traffic is intense, especially in summer. Local currents can catch even experienced swimmers off guard. The Maritime Police have been fining people who enter the water in boat circulation zones.

What’s the best time to visit?

Early morning. No question.

The first boats leave around 8:30am. At that hour, there are far fewer people, the light enters through the ceiling opening at a low angle creating a stunning visual effect, and the sea is usually calmer. At midday in July or August, the cave is packed with boats and people — hard to appreciate the place in peace.

In terms of tides: low tide is better for entering by kayak (the opening is larger). With high tide and swell, the entrance can become submerged or very narrow. Always check conditions on the day — IPMA and Windy are good references.

Other caves not to miss along the Algarve coast

Capitão Cave

Near Benagil, this cavern has a wider lateral opening that lets you see the interior from the boat. Less dramatic than Benagil but equally beautiful — terracotta-coloured walls, blue reflections from the water. Usually included in the area’s boat tours.

Boneca Cave

A local favourite along the coast between Carvoeiro and Benagil. The rock formations are very photogenic and the name comes from a stone that, with a bit of imagination, looks like a doll. Accessible by kayak or small boat.

Algar Seco, near Carvoeiro

Algar Seco is a cluster of rocks and passages you can explore on foot — it has land access via boardwalks along the coast. It’s not a closed cave, but the experience of walking among the rock formations at sea level is excellent. Free entry, with parking available in the area.

How to get to Benagil and where to park

Benagil is in the municipality of Lagoa, between Carvoeiro (to the west) and Armação de Pêra (to the east). The village is tiny — about a dozen houses, one restaurant and the beach. Access is via a narrow road from the EN125.

Parking near the beach is very limited and fills up before 9am in summer. The alternative is to park at the top of the cliff, in the informal car park about 300 metres away, and walk down. During peak periods there’s also a temporary paid parking system in the area.

Practical tips before you go

  • Book your boat or kayak in advance, especially in summer
  • Bring sunscreen and water — the tours have no shade
  • Waterproof camera or dry bag for your phone
  • Check swell conditions before going — IPMA and Windy are good references
  • If you get seasick easily, choose a calm day or opt for kayak instead of motorboat
  • Benagil Beach has a lifeguard during bathing season (usually June to September)

Benagil Cave is on everyone’s must-see list when visiting the Algarve — and rightly so. But what makes it truly special isn’t the photo. It’s the moment when you paddle in by kayak, the engine noise stops, and all you hear is the sea lapping against the walls of the cavern.
