While northern Europe endures weeks of grey skies and temperatures near zero, the Algarve keeps mild afternoons, strong light and clear skies on a regular basis. How warm is winter in the Algarve?
Warmer than almost anywhere on continental Europe, but it pays to arrive with the right expectations. Highs hover around 16 to 18°C, lows around 10 to 11°C, and sunny days clearly dominate over rainy ones. On a sunny, windless day, the feeling in the sun is spring-like; in the shade and after sunset, you’ll need a coat.

What to do in winter
Golf

Birdwatching in the Ria Formosa
Winter brings migratory birds to the Ria Formosa and the Sapal de Castro Marim: flamingos, storks and dozens of other species can be seen from Olhão to Tavira, with no special equipment needed.
Almond blossom
From late January through February, the Algarve interior dresses in the white and pink of almond blossom. It is one of the region’s natural spectacles and occurs precisely in the cheapest time of year.
Cities without crowds
Faro and its Old Town, Silves castle and Tavira’s historic centre can be visited in winter with a calm impossible in August. Local restaurants serve unhurriedly and the region shows its most authentic side.
Where to stay in winter
In winter it makes sense to stay where local life doesn’t stop. The larger towns — Faro, Lagos, Tavira, Albufeira and Vilamoura — keep restaurants, shops and entertainment going all year, while some purely tourist clusters become very quiet between November and March. Long stays: retirees and digital nomads
Many northern Europeans spend the whole winter in the Algarve, and the equation explains itself: mild climate, affordable cost of living in the low season and long-stay rates in many properties. For remote workers, sunny days and quiet towns make an office hard to beat.
Winter also has downsides
To decide honestly: days are short, with the sun setting between 5 and 6 pm; some beach facilities and seasonal restaurants close; and there are rainy weeks, though rarely consecutive days. Those seeking beach and sea bathing should pick another season — the Algarve winter is for sun, walking, golf and tranquillity, not for a towel on the sand.
