About Faro Airport (FAO)

Faro Airport is the Algarve’s only commercial airport and one of Portugal’s busiest, handling over 10 million passengers a year during peak season. It sits just 6 kilometres west of Faro city centre, which makes it unusually convenient — you can be on the motorway heading west towards Albufeira or east towards Tavira within minutes of leaving the terminal.

The airport has a single terminal with arrivals and departures on the same level. It’s compact and easy to navigate — you’ll collect your luggage, clear customs and reach the arrivals hall in under 20 minutes on most flights. Outside arrivals, you’ll find taxis, shuttle buses, car rental desks and private transfer drivers waiting with name boards.

During summer (June–September) the airport can be very busy, with flights arriving from across Europe every few minutes in the evening. If you’re arriving at peak time, factor in some extra waiting time — especially for taxis, which can queue up quickly.

Transfer Options from Faro Airport

Private Transfer — Most Comfortable, Fully Predictable

A pre-booked private transfer is the stress-free option, especially if you’re arriving with family, luggage, or after a long journey. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, monitors your flight for delays, and takes you directly to your accommodation — no stops, no shared routes.

Prices for a standard saloon car (up to 4 passengers):

  • Faro to Albufeira: approximately €40–50
  • Faro to Vilamoura: approximately €35–45
  • Faro to Lagos: approximately €70–90
  • Faro to Portimão: approximately €55–70
  • Faro to Tavira: approximately €30–40
  • Faro to Sagres: approximately €90–110

Larger vehicles (minivans for 6–8 people) cost more but often work out better per person than multiple taxis. Always book in advance — prices rise significantly for on-the-spot bookings.

Shared Shuttle — Budget-Friendly but Slower

Shared airport shuttles collect passengers from multiple flights and make several drop-offs along a route. They cost considerably less than a private transfer — typically €10–20 per person for Albufeira, €25–35 for Lagos — but the journey can take 2 hours or more if your stop is last on the route. Fine for solo travellers on a budget; less ideal for families with young children or travellers who are tired after a long-haul flight.

Taxi — Quick but Variable

Official taxis wait outside arrivals. They use meters within the city limits of Faro, but for longer journeys a fixed price is normally agreed beforehand. Expect to pay roughly similar prices to private transfers for the same destinations, though negotiating at busy times can be difficult. Taxis don’t pre-arrange for flight delays, so if your flight is late you’ll simply join the queue.

Public Bus — Cheapest Option

The Algarve’s public bus network is run primarily by Vamus Algarve. From Faro Airport, the most useful route is Line 16, which runs to Faro bus station (Estação Rodoviária de Faro) in about 20–25 minutes, costing around €2.35. From Faro bus station and the adjacent train station, you can connect to destinations across the region.

Be aware that bus frequency drops significantly in the evenings and on weekends, and the last bus from the airport can be as early as 9 pm in winter. Check current timetables on the Vamus website before relying on this option.

Train — Good for Eastern Algarve

The nearest train station to the airport is Faro Railway Station, about 6 km away (reachable by the Line 16 bus or taxi). From there, trains run east along the coast to Tavira, Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, and west towards Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos. The train is an excellent option for Tavira (around 30 minutes, under €3) and reasonable for Albufeira (40–50 minutes, around €4). For Lagos or Sagres, trains are slower and require a change at Tunes.

Car Rental — Best for Exploring

All major car rental companies have desks inside the Faro Airport arrivals hall. Picking up a car at the airport is straightforward — just allow 20–30 minutes for paperwork and vehicle handover during busy periods. Renting a car makes enormous sense if you plan to explore beyond the main resort towns. Prices start from around €25/day for a small car in shoulder season, rising to €50–80/day in peak summer.

Tips for Arriving Travellers

  • Pre-book anything that requires a fixed time — private transfers, shuttles and car hire should all be arranged before you leave home. Demand at the airport is high in summer.
  • Have euros in cash — taxis and some shuttle operators may not accept cards. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall before you exit.
  • Ask about toll transponders when renting a car — the A22 motorway (Via do Infante) charges tolls. Ask the rental company to include a toll transponder (usually €1–3/day). Driving without one means requesting a via verde via a third-party service, which is more hassle.
  • Flight delays are common in summer — if you’ve booked a private transfer, your driver will track your flight. For buses and trains, delays mean you’ll simply take the next available service.
  • The airport has a left luggage facility — useful if you’re arriving before check-in opens at your accommodation.
