Portimão: Complete Guide — Beaches, Sardines & Things to Do [2026]
Why visit Portimão
Portimão is the Algarve’s second-largest city and combines something few Algarve towns manage: a spectacular beach with a real city behind it. While Praia da Rocha draws tourists with its 200-metre-wide sands and towering cliffs, the old town keeps the feel of an authentic Portuguese city — with a market, neighbourhood cafés and the best grilled sardine restaurants in the Algarve.
It’s less touristy than Albufeira, more affordable than Vilamoura, and perfectly located to explore beaches on both sides of the coast.
Things to do in Portimão
Praia da Rocha
The Algarve’s most iconic beach — and one of its largest. At 200 metres wide with dramatic cliffs behind, it’s huge even in peak August. To the west stretch the quieter beaches of Três Castelos, Careanos, Vau and Alemão. To the east, the promenade connects to the marina.
Doca da Sardinha (Sardine Dock)
The riverside area along the Arade river is the place for grilled sardines — the city’s speciality. Restaurants along the quay serve fresh fish straight from the boats. In August, the Sardine Festival turns the entire area into a massive open-air food celebration.
Portimão Museum
Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century sardine canning factory, it’s one of the Algarve’s best museums. Interactive exhibits tell the story of the city’s maritime and industrial heritage. Winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2010.
Old town
Portimão’s centre has an easygoing charm: pedestrian streets, historic churches, a morning market and neighbourhood cafés where coffee costs €0.80. Less polished than Tavira, but genuine.
Marina
Starting point for boat trips to Benagil caves, dolphin watching and fishing excursions. Also home to good restaurants and the NoSoloÁgua beach club.
Autódromo Internacional do Algarve
15 minutes from the centre, this international racing circuit hosted F1 in 2020-2021. Offers track driving experiences for visitors.
