Why Visit Marinha Beach
Marinha Beach was named by the Michelin Guide as one of the 10 most beautiful beaches in Europe and is regularly ranked among the world’s best. The main highlight is the M-shaped rock arch, visible from both the clifftop and the beach itself — one of the most photographed landmarks in the Algarve. The waters are incredibly transparent, ideal for snorkelling, and the rock formations surrounding the beach create a natural setting that’s hard to match.
The beach is also the endpoint of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, considered one of the best hiking trails in Europe.
How to Get to Marinha Beach
By car
From the EN125, follow signs for Praia da Marinha (well signposted between Lagoa and Porches). The access road ends at a car park on top of the cliff. GPS: 37.0891, -8.4107.
By bus
In summer, the Vamus line 40 connects from Lagoa and Carvoeiro. Outside peak season, public transport is very limited — a car is practically essential.
Parking
The car park is a free dirt lot on top of the cliff. It has reasonable capacity, but between July and August it fills up quickly — arrive before 10am to secure a spot. When the main car park is full, there’s overflow parking along the access road.
Facilities
- Toilets: Yes, at the clifftop near the car park
- Restaurant/Bar: Restaurant at the clifftop with terrace and sea views
- Sun loungers: Not available for rent
- Lifeguard: June to September
- Showers: No
Best Time to Visit
The ideal months are May-June and September-October: excellent weather, pleasant water and fewer crowds. In summer (July-August), the beach gets very crowded — arrive early morning. Low tide is the best time to explore rock pools and walk between the formations. For photography, the morning light illuminates the cliffs spectacularly.
Things to Do at Marinha Beach
- Seven Hanging Valleys Trail: One of Europe’s best hiking trails. 6 km clifftop walk to Vale Centeanes Beach. Stunning views.
- Snorkelling: Crystal-clear waters with excellent visibility. Bring your mask — fish, anemones and starfish near the rocks.
- Photography: The M-shaped arch, rock formations and water colour make this a photographer’s paradise.
- Boat trips: Tours from Carvoeiro and Benagil pass by Marinha, offering unique perspectives of the caves and arches.
- Kayaking and SUP: Rent nearby and paddle along the coast to explore sea caves.
Marinha Beach with Kids
The descent is via a steep staircase of about 100 steps — difficult with pushchairs but manageable with walking children. Once on the beach, the water is generally calm inside the cove, making it reasonable for children who can swim. There’s no natural shade, so bring a parasol, hat and sunscreen. The climb back up is tiring — keep that in mind.
