Praia da Luz is a family-friendly beach in the village of the same name, about 6 km west of Lagos. It’s one of the most complete beaches in the Algarve: a long stretch of golden sand with calm water, a pleasant promenade lined with restaurants, and the impressive Rocha Negra (Black Rock) — a dark volcanic formation that contrasts with the typical limestone cliffs of the region.

Why Visit
Luz has the atmosphere many Algarve villages have lost: it’s still genuine, still quiet, still has more residents than tourists most of the year. The beach benefits from a sheltered bay that keeps the water calm. The Black Rock at the western end is a unique geological formation — volcanic basalt millions of years old creating a dramatic contrast with the golden limestone.
How to Get There
From Lagos, 10 minutes by car via EN125/EM534. The Onda bus line connects several times daily. The village is compact — everything is walkable once you arrive.
