Praia de Alvor is one of the longest beaches in the Algarve, with about 2 km of fine, soft white and golden sand lapped by calm water. Its 4.6 rating reflects the family-friendly, nature-close setting, reinforced by the Blue Flag — awarded here since 1987, the year the distinction was created in Europe — and the Quality Gold award.
Getting there and parking
It’s about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Alvor and just a few minutes’ drive from Portimão. Because it’s such a large beach, there are several access points along its length, and parking is free.
The sand and the surrounding nature
The beach is protected by a dune system and by the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, a calm-water lagoon with salt marshes and channels that shelters waterbirds, fish and molluscs. A boardwalk crosses the dunes to the sand and the pier, and there’s also a nature trail — wheelchair accessible — with viewpoints over the estuary.
Facilities
Facilities are concentrated in the central part of the beach: toilets, sunbed and umbrella hire, and lifeguards on duty during the bathing season.
Where to eat
The same central area has bars and restaurants facing the sand, making it easy to stop for a meal or a drink after swimming.
Nearby beaches
About 3 km away are Praia do Alemão and Praia do Vau. A little further lie Praia dos Três Irmãos and Praia da Rocha.
Where to stay
Several 4-star hotels sit near the beach, including Pestana Alvor South Beach, Wyndham Residences Alvor Beach and Pestana Dom João II Beach & Golf Resort, as well as the 3-star Dunas do Alvor – Torralvor. Check hotel availability near Praia de Alvor.
