Cacela Velha Beach (Praia de Cacela Velha) is one of the most preserved and authentic beaches in the Algarve. Accessible via a short boat crossing from the medieval village of Cacela Velha — a tiny hilltop settlement with a white church and fortress overlooking the Ria Formosa — this beach offers an almost primitive experience: white sand, crystal-clear water and the feeling of being in a place untouched by mass tourism.

Why Visit
Cacela Velha is the Algarve as it was before tourism. The medieval village on the clifftop is enchanting, and the beach is a long stretch of sand on the barrier island — practically deserted outside peak months. No facilities, no noise, no crowds — just you, the sand and the ocean.
How to Get There
Drive to Cacela Velha village (EN125). Walk down to the ria shore and catch a local boatman (~€2, ~2 min). Boatmen operate mainly June-September. At low tide, you can wade across on foot — but check tides carefully.
Facilities
Almost none on the beach. A seasonal beach shack in summer. Restaurants in the village above serve excellent fresh fish with magnificent views.
