How to Get to and Get Around the Algarve: Transport Guide 2026

Getting to the Algarve is easy. Getting around the Algarve without a car is another conversation entirely. This is the reality most guides don’t tell you: the region has a beautiful 150 km coastline, but public transport doesn’t reach most beaches and bus frequency outside main cities is very limited. Here’s what you actually need to know in 2026.

Faro Airport (FAO): The Gateway

Faro Airport is the Algarve’s main airport and one of the busiest in Portugal, especially in summer. It has direct connections from major European cities — London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Dublin and dozens more, operated by Ryanair, easyJet, TAP, Jet2 and others.

It’s about 4 km from Faro centre. Options for leaving the airport:

Taxi — About €15 to Faro centre. Fixed rates. To Vilamoura expect €35–45, to Albufeira €40–50, to Lagos €80–100. Licensed taxis are available at the airport exit.

Private transfer — Several local companies offer pre-booked transfers. Prices similar to taxis but with more comfort and an identified driver at the exit. Good option for groups or distant destinations like Sagres.

Public bus — The Proximo/Vamus line connects the airport to Faro centre in about 15 minutes. Economical but doesn’t serve other Algarve destinations directly. Runs at reasonable hours but with limited frequency.

Rental car — The most practical option for most travellers. Companies have desks at the airport (Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Goldcar, Budget, Enterprise, among others). In July and August cars sell out well in advance and prices rise significantly.

Rental Car: Still the Best Option

If you want to explore the hidden beaches, the mountain viewpoints, the interior villages — you need a car. There’s no way around this.

Prices vary greatly by season. In low season (November to March) you can find small cars for €15–30 per day. In July and August, the same car can cost €80–150 or more. Book at least 2–3 months in advance for summer.

Some important practical notes:

A22 — Via do Infante: The Algarve’s main motorway, running from Faro to the Spanish border (and in the other direction to the Alentejo). It has been completely toll-free since January 2025 — the electronic tolls were abolished. You do not need Via Verde, Easy Toll or any payment device. The EN125 (parallel national road) is also free but much slower and passes through every town.

Parking: Main cities (Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, Portimão) have paid car parks. At many beaches, especially in summer, chaotic parking is common — respect the rules, there’s active enforcement in August. At more remote beaches parking is generally free but limited.

Speed limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on national roads, 120 km/h on motorways. Speed cameras (fixed and mobile) are common.

Train: The Algarve Line

CP (Comboios de Portugal) operates the Algarve Line, running from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António, stopping at almost every town of any size: Lagos, Portimão, Silves, Albufeira, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira. Faro airport also has a station on the line.

It’s a slow service — regional trains stop everywhere and the line isn’t fast — but it’s cheap and passes through pleasant scenery. The Lagos–Faro journey takes about 1h30. Prices are modest (typically €5–10 per trip depending on distance).

The main limitation is that stations are often far from the beaches and historic centres. Albufeira station, for example, is 6 km from the city centre and 10 km from the main beaches. You need a local bus or taxi to complete the journey.

Bus: Vamus Algarve and FlixBus

Vamus Algarve (formerly EVA Transportes) is the main regional bus operator. It connects the main cities with reasonable frequency on weekdays, but at weekends and in the interior coverage is very limited. Useful for routes between major cities like Faro–Albufeira or Faro–Tavira.

To come from Lisbon by bus, FlixBus has direct Faro–Lisbon services in about 3 hours, with competitive prices especially if you book in advance. Rede Expressos also operates this route. The train alternative (with transfer at Tunes or Faro) takes longer but can be more comfortable.

Uber and Bolt in the Algarve

Uber and Bolt work well in the larger cities — Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, Portimão. Outside these cities, coverage is patchy and waiting times can be long. In tourist destinations in summer, demand is high and prices surge during peak times.

For journeys within a city or to the airport, they work very well. For getting between beaches or to the interior, they’re not a reliable solution.

Cycling: Ideal in the Eastern Algarve

The western Algarve is quite hilly — the Algarve mountains and the Vicentine Coast cliffs make cycling demanding. The eastern Algarve, between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António, is much flatter and has a reasonable cycle path network, especially along Ria Formosa.

In Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Albufeira there are bike hire options available. For a half-day exploration along the lagoon or through the eastern interior villages, it’s an excellent option, especially in spring and autumn when the heat isn’t an issue.

Summary: What Works for Whom

If you want to see a lot of the Algarve with full mobility: rent a car. It’s the clearest option for free exploration.

If you’re staying in one city and want to explore the area on foot and by taxi: this works in Faro, Tavira, Lagos or Albufeira with relative ease.

If you’re coming specifically for golf, resorts or beaches near your accommodation: you can manage without a car if the resort has shuttles or is well-located.

The reality is that the Algarve was built, urbanistically, around the car. That’s not going to change soon. Plan accordingly and you won’t be surprised.
